De Corona-maatregelen die noopten tot 'thuiswerken' hadden ook voordelen, zo blijkt uit dit rijke Jaarboek Multatuli 2021, dat is gevuld met de resultaten van tijdens de 'lock-down' verricht onderzoek. Neem de speurtocht naar de 'kraamkamer' van Max Havelaar in het Brusselse hotel 'Au Prince Belge' door Antoon Bosselaers en Philip Vermoortel. Zij ontdekten dat het overgeleverde beeld van Multatuli, die op een zolderkamertje van een armoedig logement zijn meesterwerk schreef, niet altijd strookt met de feiten. Ook het openingsartikel van Tom Phijffer over de weduwe van Dekkers waarschijnlijk vermoorde voorganger in Lebak, Edouard Carolus (Slotering in Max Havelaar), is ronduit onthullend. Hetzelfde geldt voor de inzichten die bekende en minder bekende Multatuli liefhebbers opdeden bij het met de hand overschrijven van Max Havelaar. De 'making of' van deze unieke Lockdown-editie geeft verrassende inkijkjes in de stand van het Multatuli-onderzoek. Andere parels in dit nummer: twee onbekende brieven van Douwes Dekker, toegelicht door Dik van der Meulen en de nooit eerder openbaar gemaakte perikelen rond de financiering van het Multatuli-standbeeld in Amsterdam. Hilarisch zijn vooral de zoetsappige bedelbrieven van uitgever Geert van Oorschot aan onder andere koningin Beatrix.

Met ingang van 2014 is het tijdschrift omgevormd tot een jaarboek. Het wordt uitgegeven door het Multatuli Genootschap, dat zich daarnaast toelegt op het instandhouden en openhouden van het Multatuli Huis.

Nog altijd is Multatuli een inspiratiebron voor schrijvers, denkers en klokkenluiders. In dit nummer van Over Multatuli trekken ze in een bonte stoet voorbij. Lale Gül vertelt over haar door Multatuli geïnspireerde bestseller Ik ga leven. Otto de Kat onthult de werkelijkheid achter zijn recente roman Het uur van de olifant, waarin hij een vergeten multatuliaanse klokkenluider over Nederlandse oorlogsmisdaden op Atjeh tot leven wekt. Oorlogsmisdaden die tot op heden ‘officieel’ niet zo mogen heten, zoals blijkt uit het artikel ‘Klokkenluiders en doofpotten’ van Jurjen Pen. Dik van der Meulen belicht de invloed van Multatuli op de schrijver Nescio en Elsbeth Etty laat zien hoe verregaand columnist Hugo Brandt Corstius alias Piet Grijs zich – aangemoedigd door zijn bewonderaars – vereenzelvigde met Eduard Douwes Dekker. Tekenaar Dick Matena, die ‘Saïdjah en Adinda’ verstripte, vertelt dat hij op jonge leeftijd geraakt werd door het gedicht ‘Ik weet niet waar ik sterven zal’ en Liesje Schreuders recenseert Tom Phijffers boek Vuur, vuur!, over een cold case uit de Max Havelaar. Romancier Gustaaf Peek tenslotte ontmaskert Multatuli’s vermeende zelfspot in Minnebrieven als eigenliefde en houdt al doende ook een aantal hedendaagse schrijvers (en recensenten) een spiegel voor.

Najaar 1971 verbleef de letterkundige Rob Nieuwenhuys (Semarang 1908-Amsterdam 1999) bijna twee maanden op Java. Hij was er door de Nederlandse regering in het kader van het Cultureel Akkoord als adviseur heen gestuurd om de betrekkingen met de voormalige kolonie te helpen herstellen. Enkele weken daarvoor hadden koningin Juliana en prins Bernhard een staatsbezoek aan Indonesië gebracht. Voor het eerst sinds 1952 keerde Nieuwenhuys terug naar zijn land van herkomst. Het zou ook voor het laatst zijn. Rob Nieuwenhuys leefde tussen twee werelden, die van zijn Hollandse vader en zijn Indo-Europese moeder. Hij schreef er een semi-autobiografische roman over, Vergeelde portretten (1954) en de bundel essays Tussen twee vaderlanden (1959). Zijn magnum opus Oost-Indische Spiegel (1972), de beschrijving van de Indisch-Nederlandse letterkunde, leverde hem grote faam op. Bekend werd hij verder door zijn fotoboeken over tempo doeloe, 'de tijd van vroeger'. Op zijn reis over Java ontmoette Nieuwenhuys onder meer de filmmaker Fons Rademakers en Willem Frederik Hermans, met wie hij later in de clinch zou liggen over de Max Havelaar van Multatuli. Tom Phijffer reconstrueerde de missie van Rob Nieuwenhuys op basis van zijn persoonlijke archief, interviews en officiële bescheiden betreffende het Cultureel Akkoord. Het resultaat is een fascinerend verslag van een vergeten reis onder politiek beladen omstandigheden. Eind juli 2020 sprak Thys met Tom Phijffer over zijn boek en over Rob Nieuwenhuys. Het gesprek werd opgenomen in de stijlkamer van het Multatulihuis in Amsterdam en is te zien op Youtube.

This edited collection explores the ways in which our understanding of the past in Dutch history and culture can be rethought to consider not only how it forms part of the present but how it can relate also to the future. This open access book examines more than two centuries of societal development using novel historical and statistical approaches. It applies the well-being monitor developed by Statistics Netherlands that has been endorsed by a significant part of the international, statistical community. It features The Netherlands as a case study, which is an especially interesting example; although it was one of the world’s richest countries around 1850, extreme poverty and inequality were significant problems of well-being at the time. Monitors of 1850, 1910, 1970 and 2015 depict the changes in three dimensions of well-being: the quality of life 'here and now', 'later' and 'elsewhere'. The analysis of two centuries shows the solutions to the extreme poverty problem and the appearance of new sustainability problems, especially in domestic and foreign ecological systems. The study also reveals the importance of natural capital: soil, air, water and subsoil resources, showing their relation with the social structure of the ‘here and now ́. Treatment and trade of natural resources also impacted on the quality of life ‘later’ and ‘elsewhere.’ Further, the book illustrates the role of natural capital by dividing the capital into three types of raw materials and concomitant material flows: bio-raw materials, mineral and fossil subsoil resources. Additionally, the analysis of the institutional context identifies the key roles of social groups in well-being development. The book ends with an assessment of the solutions and barriers offered by the historical anchoring of the well-being and sustainability issues. This unique analysis of well-being and sustainability and its institutional analysis appeals to historians, statisticians and policy makers.

This book examines the afterlife of decolonization in the collective memory of the Netherlands. It offers a new perspective on the cultural history of representing the decolonization of the Dutch East Indies, and maps out how a contested collective memory was shaped. Taking a transdisciplinary approach and applying several theoretical frames from literary studies, sociology, cultural anthropology and film theory, the author reveals how mediated memories contributed to a process of what he calls "unremembering." He analyses in detail a broad variety of sources, including novels, films, documentaries, radio interviews, memoires and historical studies, to reveal how five decades of representing and remembering decolonization fed into an unremembering by which some key notions were silenced or ignored. The author concludes that historians, or the historical guild, bear much responsibility for the unremembering of decolonization in Dutch collective memory.
