In De rechter en de deporteurs staat de strafvervolging en berechting centraal van een aantal personen die hoofdverantwoordelijk waren voor de wegvoering van de Joden uit Nederland gedurende de Tweede Wereldoorlog. In het middelpunt van dit onderzoek staat de voormalige Befehlshaber der Sicherheitspolizei und des Sicherheitsdienstes in den Niederlanden dr. Wilhelm Harster. Als rechterhand van de Höhere SS- und Polizeiführer Hanns Albin Rauter was Harster de feitelijke organisator van de vervolgingsmaatregelen en deportaties. Anders dan Rauter werd Harster door de naoorlogse Nederlandse justitie echter opmerkelijk mild behandeld. Deze behandeling, waarop van meet af aan ernstige kritiek werd geleverd, wordt in het boek nader beschreven en van commentaar voorzien. Daarnaast komt ook Harsters latere strafvervolging in West-Duitsland aan de orde, alsmede die van een aantal van zijn betrokken ondergeschikten. Auteur Dick de Mildt is historicus en redacteur van de bronnenverzameling ‘Justiz und NS-Verbrechen. Sammlung deutscher Strafurteile wegen nationalsozialistischer Tötungsverbrechen’.

The first comprehensive, comparative study of the 'Jewish Councils' in the Netherlands, Belgium and France during Nazi rule. In the postwar period, there was extensive focus on these organisations' controversial role as facilitators of the Holocaust. They were seen as instruments of Nazi oppression, aiding the process of isolating and deporting the Jews they were ostensibly representing. As a result, they have chiefly been remembered as forms of collaboration. Using a wide range of sources including personal testimonies, diaries, administrative documents and trial records, Laurien Vastenhout demonstrates that the nature of the Nazi regime, and its outlook on these bodies, was far more complex. She sets the conduct of the Councils' leaders in their prewar and wartime social and situational contexts and provides a thorough understanding of their personal contacts with the Germans and clandestine organisations. Between Community and Collaboration reveals what German intentions with these organisations were during the course of the occupation, and allows for a deeper understanding of the different ways in which the Holocaust unfolded in each of these countries.

Het tweede deel bevat een nader onderzoek naar het achtergrondprofiel van hun moordenaars, mede op basis van de gerechtelijke dossiers. De meest prominente onder hen is de voormalige kampcommandant van Treblinka, Franz Stangl. De Mildt laat zien dat hun daderprofiel fundamenteel afwijkt van dat in de doorsnee geschiedschrijving over de Holocaust. De moeizame receptie van het persoonlijkheidsbeeld van de daders, die centraal staat in het derde deel, komt duidelijk tot uiting in de reacties op Hannah Arendts interpretatie van Adolf Eichmann. Na de oorlog noemde de toenmalige minister van Justitie hem 'een van de zwaarste oorlogsmisdadigers tijdens de Duitse bezetting'. Willi Lages was verantwoordelijk voor de deportatie van 75.000 Joden en de executie van zo'n 450 verzetsmensen. Hij zetelde als hoofd van de Sicherheitspolizei und Sicherheitsdienst in Amsterdam, maar zijn zeggenschap over Joodse Nederlanders strekte zich over heel het land uit. Lages had het 'handwerk' in zijn geboortestad Braunschweig geleerd, waar hij bij de straatsurveillance kwam en het in de jaren dertig tot tweede man van de Gestapo bracht. Voordat Hitler in 1933 aan de macht kwam, zaten de nazi's al drie jaar in de regering van de deelstaat Braunschweig. Lages' eerste grote opdracht sinds zijn komst naar Nederland was het opsporen en het voor de rechter brengen van de leiders van de Februaristaking. Na de oorlog werd hij ter dood veroordeeld, maar hij ontsnapte wonderwel aan executie. Dit is het verhaal van een ogenschijnlijk gewone politieman, zij het een heel ambitieuze, die op het glijdende vlak raakte en uiteindelijk massamoordenaar werd. Sytze van der Zee was tot 1996 journalist, onder meer als correspondent voor NRC Handelsblad in Duitsland, Brussel en Washington, daarna als hoofdredacteur van Het Parool. Sindsdien is hij auteur van een reeks oorlogsboeken, waaronder Potgieterlaan 7, Voor Führer, volk en vaderland, Vogelvrij.
