Decolonizing Foreign Language Education interrogates current foreign language and second language education approaches that prioritize white, western thought. Edited by acclaimed critical theorist and linguist Donaldo Macedo, this volume includes cutting-edge work by a select group of critical language scholars working to rigorously challenge the marginalization of foreign language education and the displacement of indigenous and non-standard language varieties through the reification of colonial languages. Each chapter confronts the hold of colonialism and imperialism that inform and shape the relationship between foreign language education and literary studies by asserting that a critical approach to applied linguistics is just as important a tool for FL/ESL/EFL educators as literature or linguistic theory.

In light of increasing globalization, this collection makes the case for global citizenship education as a way forward for transforming foreign language learning and teaching to better address current and future global challenges in times of unprecedented change. The volume maps a multi-dimensional approach within foreign language pedagogy to take up the challenge of "educating the global citizen". Drawing on sociocultural, pedagogical, cosmopolitan, digital and civic-minded perspectives, the book explores the challenges in constructing epistemological frameworks in increasingly global environments, the need for developing context-sensitive educational practices, the potential of linking up with work from related disciplines, and the impact of these considerations on different educational settings. The collection reflects an international range of voices, attuned to global and local nuances, to offer a holistic compilation of conceptual innovations to showcase the relevance of global citizenship issues in foreign language education and encourage future research. This book will be of interest to scholars in intercultural education, foreign language education, and language teaching, as well as policymakers and foreign language teachers. This edited volume provides innovative insights into how critical language pedagogy and taboo topics can inform and transform the teaching and learning of foreign languages. The book investigates the potential as well as the challenges involved in dealing with taboo topics in the foreign language classroom. Traditionally subsumed under the acronym PARSNIP (politics, alcohol, religion, narcotics, isms, and pork). By examining how additional controversial topics such as disability, racism, conspiracy theories and taboo language can be integrated into conceptual teaching frameworks and teaching practice, this edited volume draws on examples from literary texts and pop culture such as young adult novels, music videos, or rap songs and investigates their potential for developing critical literacies. The book considers foreign language teaching outside of English teaching contexts and sets the groundwork for addressing the integration of taboo topics in foreign language education theory, research, and practice. Filling an important gap in educational research, the book will be of great interest to researchers, academics, and students of foreign language education, critical pedagogy, and applied linguistics. It will also be useful reading for teacher trainers and educators of foreign language education. Chapter 1 of this book is available for free in PDF format as Open Access from the individual product page at www.taylorfrancis.com. The Politics Of English Language Education And Social Inequality written by Maya Kalyanpur and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-12-30 with Education categories.

Based on policy analysis and empirical data, this book examines the problematic consequences of colonial legacies of language policies and English language education in the multilingual contexts of the Global South. Using a postcolonial lens, the volume explores the raciolinguistics of language hierarchies that results in students from low-income backgrounds losing their mother tongues without acquiring academic fluency in English. Using findings from five major research projects, the book analyzes the specific context of India, where ambiguous language policies have led to uneasy tensions between the colonial language of English, national and state languages, and students’ linguistic diversity is mistaken for cognitive deficits when English is the medium of instruction in schools. The authors situate their own professional and personal experiences in their efforts at dismantling postcolonial structures through reflective practice as teacher educators, and present solutions of decolonial resistance to linguistic hierarchies that include critical pedagogical alternatives to bilingual education and opportunities for increased teacher agency. Ultimately, this timely volume will appeal to researchers, scholars, academics, and students in the fields of international and comparative education, English and literacy studies, and language arts more broadly. Those interested in English language learning in low-income countries specifically will also find this book to be of benefit to their research.

Decolonizing Efl Writing Education written by Shizhou Yang and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-01-15 with Education categories.

Arguably the first book-length exploration of decolonizing English as a Foreign Language (EFL) writing education, this novel volume uses poetic autoethnography to provide a situated, dynamic, and complex view of multilingual writers through their second language (L2) academic writing and creative writing. Responding to contemporary calls to decolonize L2 writing as a field and diversify academic writing for multilingual students, this book is the first of its kind to explore the decolonization of EFL writing education from a Global Southern context. Chapters critically and creatively consider issues of educational technologies, translanguaging, academic writing, epistemology, and pedagogy from two writing courses from a Global South and classroom writing ecology perspective. Using poetic autoethnography alongside data from authentic writing classrooms in Thailand, the book posits that emergent translanguaging literature can be cultivated for decolonization purposes, critiquing and providing decolonial options in such areas as monolingual ideology, freewriting, student identity, and mind. Empowering EFL writing teachers to raise students’ critical awareness of issues such as writing, culture, and coloniality, this book will be of key interest to researchers, scholars, and postgraduate students in the fields of applied linguistics, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), L2 writing, multilingual education, and language policy and planning.

This book takes a look at the affordances of engaging second/foreign language students in educational projects that bridge the gap between the classroom and the museum. Studies on language learning and teaching beyond the classroom have shown that students learn in different settings and through different types of activities and that their learning is influenced by the intersection of different dimensions. Drawing on both language and museum learning and teaching research, this book discusses the aspects that make the museum an ideal language learning setting and then outlines evidence-based pedagogical guidelines to design effective learning experiences for language learners across the classroom and the museum. It will be of interest to graduate students, language teachers, teacher trainers, museum educators, and researchers in fields including Educational Linguistics, Anthropological Linguistics, and Museum Studies (Education).
