These sections cover methodological approaches, the history of defining terrorism, the psychology of terror, political violence, defining Terrorism Through the Lens of Actions, the concept of the terrorist act, the terrorist label, the diversity of terrorist characteristics, concluding remarks and refining the Definition of Terrorism for Better Understanding. 'One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter' are such movements as Hezbollah, Hamas, the IRA, ETA, the Tamil Tigers, and so on 'terrorists' or 'freedom fighters'? With the absence of a consensus on a clear, universal and permanent definition of terrorism, that famous adage will continue to characterise international relations, and the chaos, confusion and controversy surrounding the term 'terrorist' will continue to lead to double standards in applying international law. Why is there so much confusion when it comes to pinpointing who is a terrorist? The controversy, the author affirms, lies in the definition - or rather, the absence of definition - of terrorism. Indeed, hitherto, the definition of terrorism that has been used, and abused, in international relations has been mainly political, relative, partial, shifting, and selective. The legal dimension has been conspicuously missing. How can terrorism be combated in a fair and efficient manner, asks the author, if it is not first identified? To that end, she lays down the conditions and criteria that are necessary for defining terrorism and thenceforth ending once and for all the double standards in defining and fighting terrorism. Abir Taha holds a postgraduate degree in philosophy from the Sorbonne, and is a career diplomat for the government of Lebanon, having previously served as the Consul at the Lebanese embassy in Paris, and as First Secretary at Lebanon's Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva. A thinker and a poet as well, she is also the author of several other books in English, including Nietzsche's Coming God, or the Redemption of the Divine (Arktos, 2013) and Verses of Light (Arktos, 2014).

This book engages with the most urgent philosophical questions pertaining to the problem of terrorism. What is terrorism? Could it ever be justified? Assuming that terrorism is just one of many kinds of political violence, the book denies that it is necessarily wrong and worse than war. In fact, it may be justifiable under certain circumstances.

International anti-terrorism measures existed long before 11 September 2001 but have increased markedly since. A myriad of norms in different branches of law are now deployed to confront transnational and domestic terrorism. There is also a proliferating body of 'soft law' addressing terrorism, stemming from United Nations organs, specialised international bodies and regional organisations. It is timely to draw together these diverse legal developments over time into a single reference work. Bringing the original documents together provides for ease of reference and enables scholars, practitioners and students to more easily compare and contrast various sources. The book's coverage is comprehensive (thematically, organisationally, geographically and temporally) and open to a balance of sources (hard and soft), but is judicious in its selection and prioritisation of the most significant and representative documents - in a field where there are many repetitive or insubstantial documents. Importantly, the book looks beyond the traditional trans-Atlantic bias towards European, British and American sources in this area to include materials from Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. Taken as a whole, the book aids in evidencing the emerging field of international anti-terrorism law.

This book addresses the complex, challenging, and dangerous problems relating to terrorism and to the attempts to address and stop terrorism. It includes not only a positivistic legal analysis of issues, but attempts to assess the costs facing us all in this modern reality of political violence. Blakesley challenges the so-called realist premise of fighting fire with fire and attempts to devolve a working definition of terrorism that may be applied to whatever group or nation that uses terror or terrorism as a tactic or strategy. Published under the Transnational Publishers imprint.

Despite the growth of interest in the study of terrorism since 9/11, terrorism analysts rarely take a multidisciplinary approach to the subject. This leaves a number of terrorism's characteristics to be explored in new and unique ways. Terrorism's Unanswered Questions brings together scholars from the fields of criminology, international relations, law, political science, security studies, and sociology to answer several important questions where consensus has yet to be reached. Each chapter offers a new approach to the question asked that is both unique and challenges popular thought. The result is an original work appealing to a broad audience of scholars and students who desire to develop a better understanding of terrorism's characteristics. In the wake of the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States terrorism became a topic for the masses to explore, rather than the hidden purview of analysts and scholars tucked away at the CIA or in the ivory tower. Now, more than five years later, there remains much to be discovered about terrorism and its causes. This volume takes a look at some of terrorism's unanswered questions. How do we define terrorism? What threat does the United States face from weapons of mass destruction? Why has international law failed to stop terrorism? These are but three of the questions addressed in this volume. While the editors do not claim to have all of the answers, they do promise a view of terrorism not seen before.
