Time delayed (lagged) variables are an inherent feature of biological/physiological systems. For example, infection from a disease may at first be asymptomatic, and only after a delay is the infection apparent so that treatment can begin. Thus, to adequately describe physiological systems, time delays are frequently required and must be included in the equations of mathematical models. The intent of this book is to present a methodology for the formulation and computer implementation of mathematical models based on time delay ordinary differential equations (DODEs) and partial differential equations (DPDEs). The DODE/DPDE methodology is presented through a series of example applications, particularly in biomedical science and engineering (BMSE). The computer-based implementation of the example models is explained with routines coded (programmed) in R, a quality, open-source scientific computing system that is readily available from the Internet. Formal mathematics is minimized, e.g., no theorems and proofs. Rather, the presentation is through detailed examples that the reader/researcher/analyst can execute on modest computers. The DPDE analysis is based on the method of lines (MOL), an established general algorithm for PDEs, implemented with finite differences. The example applications can first be executed to confirm the reported solutions, then extended by variation of the parameters and the equation terms, and even the forumulation and use of alternative DODE/DPDE models. • Introduces time delay ordinary and partial differential equations (DODE/DPDEs) and their numerical computer-based integration (solution) • Illustrates the computer implementation of DODE/DPDE models with coding (programming) in R, a quality, open-source scientific programming system readily available from the Internet • Applies DODE/DPDE models to biological/physiological systems through a series of examples • Provides the R routines for all of the illustrative applications through a download link • Facilitates the use of the models with reasonable time and effort on modest computers

Delay Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations is devoted to linear and nonlinear ordinary and partial differential equations with constant and variable delay. It considers qualitative features of delay differential equations and formulates typical problem statements. Exact, approximate analytical and numerical methods for solving such equations are described, including the method of steps, methods of integral transformations, method of regular expansion in a small parameter, method of matched asymptotic expansions, iteration-type methods, Adomian decomposition method, collocation method, Galerkin-type projection methods, Euler and Runge-Kutta methods, shooting method, method of lines, finite-difference methods for PDEs, methods of generalized and functional separation of variables, method of functional constraints, method of generating equations, and more. The presentation of the theoretical material is accompanied by examples of the practical application of methods to obtain the desired solutions. Exact solutions are constructed for many nonlinear delay reaction-diffusion and wave-type PDEs that depend on one or more arbitrary functions. A review is given of the most common mathematical models with delay used in population theory, biology, medicine, economics, and other applications. The book contains much new material previously unpublished in monographs. It is intended for a broad audience of scientists, university professors, and graduate and postgraduate students specializing in applied and computational mathematics, mathematical physics, mechanics, control theory, biology, medicine, chemical technology, ecology, economics, and other disciplines. Individual sections of the book and examples are suitable for lecture courses on applied mathematics, mathematical physics, and differential equations for delivering special courses and for practical training.

Stability Of Linear Delay Differential Equations written by Dimitri Breda and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-10-21 with Science categories.

This book presents the authors' recent work on the numerical methods for the stability analysis of linear autonomous and periodic delay differential equations, which consist in applying pseudospectral techniques to discretize either the solution operator or the infinitesimal generator and in using the eigenvalues of the resulting matrices to approximate the exact spectra. The purpose of the book is to provide a complete and self-contained treatment, which includes the basic underlying mathematics and numerics, examples from population dynamics and engineering applications, and Matlab programs implementing the proposed numerical methods. A number of proofs is given to furnish a solid foundation, but the emphasis is on the (unifying) idea of the pseudospectral technique for the stability analysis of DDEs. It is aimed at advanced students and researchers in applied mathematics, in dynamical systems and in various fields of science and engineering, concerned with delay systems. A relevant feature of the book is that it also provides the Matlab codes to encourage the readers to experience the practical aspects. They could use the codes to test the theory and to analyze the performances of the methods on the given examples. Moreover, they could easily modify them to tackle the numerical stability analysis of their own delay models.

Shedding light on new opportunities in predictor feedback, this book significantly broadens the set of techniques available to a mathematician or engineer working on delay systems. It is a collection of tools and techniques that make predictor feedback ideas applicable to nonlinear systems, systems modeled by PDEs, systems with highly uncertain or completely unknown input/output delays, and systems whose actuator or sensor dynamics are modeled by more general hyperbolic or parabolic PDEs, rather than by pure delay. Replete with examples, Delay Compensation for Nonlinear, Adaptive, and PDE Systems is an excellent reference guide for graduate students, researchers, and professionals in mathematics, systems control, as well as chemical, mechanical, electrical, computer, aerospace, and civil/structural engineering. Parts of the book may be used in graduate courses on general distributed parameter systems, linear delay systems, PDEs, nonlinear control, state estimator and observers, adaptive control, robust control, or linear time-varying systems.

Abstract semilinear functional differential equations arise from many biological, chemical, and physical systems which are characterized by both spatial and temporal variables and exhibit various spatio-temporal patterns. The aim of this book is to provide an introduction of the qualitative theory and applications of these equations from the dynamical systems point of view. The required prerequisites for that book are at a level of a graduate student. The style of presentation will be appealing to people trained and interested in qualitative theory of ordinary and functional differential equations.

Exact Methods For Nonlinear Pdes written by Andrei D. Polyanin and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-08-13 with Mathematics categories.

Exact Methods for Nonlinear PDEs describes effective analytical methods for finding exact solutions to nonlinear differential equations of mathematical physics and other partial differential equations and also demonstrates the practical applications of these methods. It covers the methods of generalized separation of variables, methods of functional separation of variables, the classical method of symmetry reductions, the direct method of symmetry reductions, the method of weak symmetry reductions, and the method of differential constraints. The book presents several simple methods for finding exact solutions to nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs). These methods do not require specialized knowledge and aim to minimize intermediate calculations. For the first time, it discusses the application of nonrigorous, intuitive reasoning in deriving exact solutions to nonlinear PDEs. Each section provides numerous examples, problems, and exercises to help readers develop practical skills in applying the methods. The material is illustrated with equations of mass and heat transfer, hydrodynamics, wave theory, nonlinear optics, and other nonlinear equations of mathematical physics. The key points that distinguish this book from others in the field include: • it presents many methods in a simpler and more visual format; • it describes a number of simple methods for constructing exact solutions to nonlinear PDEs and delay PDEs; • it emphasizes and details the practical use of non-rigorous reasoning to derive exact solutions for nonlinear PDEs. The book is intended for a diverse audience, including researchers, university professors, engineers, postgraduates, and students specializing in applied mathematics, theoretical physics, and engineering sciences.
