Western moral and political theory in the last two centuries has widely held that morality and politics are independent of a divine reality. Claiming that this consensus is flawed, prominent theologian Franklin I. Gamwell argues that there is a necessary relation between moral worth and belief in God. Without appealing to the beliefs of any specific religion, Gamwell defends a return to the view that moral and political principles depend on a divine purpose. To separate politics from the divine misrepresents the distinctive character of human freedom, Gamwell maintains, and thus prevents a full understanding of the nature of justice. Principles of justice define "democracy on purpose" as the political form in which we pursue the divine good. Engaging in a dialogue with such major representatives of the dominant consensus as Kant, Habermas, and Rawls, and informed by the philosophical writings of Alfred North Whitehead, this book makes the case for a neoclassical metaphysics that restores a religious sensibility to our political life.

"To Serve a Larger Purpose" calls for the reclamation of the original democratic purposes of civic engagement and examines the requisite transformation of higher education required to achieve it. The contributors to this timely and relevant volume effectively highlight the current practice of civic engagement and point to the institutional change needed to realize its democratic ideals. Using multiple perspectives, "To Serve a Larger Purpose" explores the democratic processes and purposes that reorient civic engagement to what the editors call "democratic engagement." The norms of democratic engagement are determined by values such as inclusiveness, collaboration, participation, task sharing, and reciprocity in public problem solving and an equality of respect for the knowledge and experience that everyone contributes to education, knowledge generation, and community building. This book shrewdly rethinks the culture of higher education.

Democracy does not deliver on the things we have assumed are its natural outcomes. This, coupled with a growing sense of malaise in both new and established democracies forms the basis to the assertion made by some, that these are not democracies at all. Through considerable, impressive empirical analysis of a variety of voting methods, across twenty different nations, Roslyn Fuller presents the data that makes this contention indisputable. Proving that the party which forms the government rarely receives the majority of the popular vote, that electoral systems regularly produce manufactured majorities and that the better funded side invariably wins such contests in both elections and referenda, Fuller’s findings challenge the most fundamental elements of both national politics and broader society. Beast and Gods argues for a return to democracy as perceived by the ancient Athenians. Boldly arguing for the necessity of the Aristotelian assumption that citizens are agents whose wishes and aims can be attained through participation in politics, and through an examination of what “goods” are provided by democracy, Fuller offers a powerful challenge to the contemporary liberal view that there are no "goods" in politics, only individual citizens seeking to fulfil their particular interests.

Like many Americans, Ricky Vogt was searching for a career and purpose during the fallout from America's 2008 economic implosion. At the same time the nation was searching to resolve energy, environmental, and economic problems within a dysfunctional political system. This story explains how Vogt joined his fellow Americans as they fought amongst themselves in search of a better vision. He questions how community resolves the tension between intolerance and personal liberty; between the selfishness of trickle-down economics and the ideals of spirituality and our founding documents promoting the common good. The book depicts Vogt's evolving search for better solutions and a new way forward.

This book shows how the United States can begin dealing with the most difficult and intractable political issues that afflict liberal democracy today: by initiating an inclusive public practice of ethical dialogue and deliberation. Beyond Liberalism argues that there is a flaw in liberalism: the doctrine of individualism. Specifically, the defect consists in two distinct ideas: "atomism" and "subjectivism." These ideas underpin the "principle of freedom," which is our default method for making personal choices and resolving interpersonal disagreements but contains no standard for determining what might be worth doing, and hence no criteria for assigning relative priority to values in conflict. Objective ethical judgments can be achieved, however, if we understand that, insofar as they support the fulfillment of empirically identified human needs, statements about good and bad are propositions of a factual nature. A conception of the good for human beings is implicit in the fulfillment of those needs. To articulate that conception, we need a constructive, productive public practice of ethical dialogue and deliberation. To build such a practice will require what amounts to a life of "ethical heroism." This book seeks to encourage that sort of life.

Le Viandier (often called Le Viandier de Taillevent) is a recipe book generally attributed to Guillaume Tirel, alias Taillevent. It is known, the earliest version of the work was written around 1300, before the alleged author, Tyrel's was born. Le Viandier is one of the earliest recipe collections of the Middle Ages, along with the Latin Liber de Coquina (early 14th century) and the English Forme of Cury (c. 1390). It is also famous as a book that contains the first detailed description of an entremet.

To Strive, To Seek, To Find explains how an avowedly ethical practice of public dialogue and deliberation can counteract the growing discontent with liberalism and the threat it poses to democratic beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. The book describes the form dialogue and deliberation must take. It concludes with an appeal to our felt need to restore a sense of purpose to our life in common. Political conflict in the U.S. has been growing increasingly adversarial and intractable. Opponents agree on almost nothing, not even the most rudimentary facts. People have sorted themselves into ideological "tribes" whose worldviews are increasingly at odds. Support for democratic ideals and principles, such as tolerance and compromise, are weakening. Much of the public is angry and resentful. Clearly, liberal democracy is under growing stress. It is threatened not from without, but from within - by the very ideas and practices for which it has long been celebrated. Although liberalism in the modern era has improved life greatly for many people (and continues to do so), it is dogged by a nagging question: "Is this all there is?" Despite the benefits it has bestowed, such as material prosperity, it "has left a hunger for shared public conceptions about the purpose of life." A democratic society's way of life is the public expression of an ethical ideal that offers a provisional and evolving answer to this question. Liberalism celebrates a plurality of approaches to life, but it does nothing to encourage reflection on the desirability and acceptability of those approaches. Its highly individualistic, "laissez-faire" approach to ethics - which almost all of us, from social democrats to libertarians, take for granted - provides little support for our efforts, as individuals and as a society, to reflect on and pursue a meaningful life. Because it treats value (goodness) as a function of personal desire and treats freedom (especially in the guise of rights) as the panacea for all conflicts, liberalism turns the political arena into a kind of market in which groups and individuals compete with each other to determine "who gets what, when, and how." It offers no rational way of securing agreement concerning the ethical dilemmas underlying many of the political issues that divide us. This disables and discourages us from deliberating together. As a result, power becomes the only political currency that matters, and liberalism ends up sending the message that we may use any means necessary to achieve our self-chosen ends. Human beings require a persuasive and animating vision of human place and purpose in the great scheme of things. Constructing meaning and purpose requires an ongoing practice of public dialogue and deliberation that helps us ask and answer (even if indirectly) the fundamental question of ethics: "How should we live?" To Strive, To Seek, To Find explains why we must turn to ethical dialogue and deliberation to restore meaning to our lives in the face of liberalism's failure to support our efforts to explore, generate, and evaluate answers to the questions of human purpose and how we ought to live. It shows how we can do this, and how in the process we can repair our strained civic relationships by resolving, or at least mitigating, the fraught issues that divide us.

Conflicting Objectives In Democracy Promotion written by Julia Leininger and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-05 with Political Science categories.

The agenda of external actors often includes a number of objectives that do not necessarily and automatically go together. Fostering security and stability in semi-authoritarian regimes collides with policies aimed at the support of processes of democratization prone to conflict and destabilization. Meanwhile, the promotion of national self-determination and political empowerment might lead to forms of democracy, partially incompatible with liberal understandings. These conflicting objectives are often problematized as challenges to the effectiveness of international democracy promotion. This book presents systematic research about their emergence and effects. The contributing authors investigate (post-) conflict societies, developing countries, and authoritarian regimes in Southeast Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia. They identify the socio-economic and political conditions in the recipient country, the interaction between international and local actors, and the capacity of international and local actors as relevant for explaining the emergence of conflicting objectives. And they empirically show that faced with conflicting objectives donors either use a ‘wait and see’-approach (i.e. not to act to overcome such conflicts), they prioritize security, state-building and development over democracy, or they compromise democracy promotion with other goals. However, convincing strategies for dealing with such conflicts still need to be devised. This book was published as a special issue of Democratization.
