Questo, in estrema sin-tesi, il percorso che attende il lettore: un "viaggio" chiarificatore, a volte persi-no doloroso, attraverso la nostra koine culturale, che si scopre via via essere koine economica, monopolizzata e avvilita dalla pubblicita e dalla logica del consenso. La forma di democrazia che viviamo oggi e quella mediatica, una forma mai esistita prima, e alla quale occorre applicare una critica inedita, quindi lontana dagli sviluppi teorici dei secoli passati; non ha piu valore l'e-timo greco "potere del popolo," sostituito da quello di "potere dei media," al contempo luogo della discussione e dell'interazione sociale. Il principio di maggioranza, proprio della democrazia, diviene l'instrumentum regni del po-tere mediatico: una maggioranza fittizia ricavata dallo share Tv viene pre-sentata secondo i canoni della retorica democratica, e la logica commerciale s'impadronisce della retorica democratica. -Il consumo e espressione demo-cratica, il discorso e privilegio aristocratico... gratificazione immaginaria e ripresa dell'analfabetismo promosse dalla societa spettacolare-. L'unica pos-sibilita che si rende disponibile per incrementare la democrazia consiste nel ridurre l'asimmetria di conoscenze tra i cittadini, fino a permettere la parteci-pazione democratica solo a coloro che ne avranno i necessari requisiti cultu-rali; -La forma democratica avvilita e resa clownesca dal commercio e dal folklore populista, potra ritrovare linfa vitale dall'operare dei suoi artisti, dal-la stesura di nuove forme di relazione tra il proprio e il comune-. A compelling look at how a people can be unfree even though they are not oppressed Italy is a country of free political institutions, yet it has become a nation of servile courtesans, with Silvio Berlusconi as their prince. This is the controversial argument that Italian political philosopher and noted Machiavelli biographer Maurizio Viroli puts forward in The Liberty of Servants. Drawing upon the classical republican conception of liberty, Viroli shows that a people can be unfree even though they are not oppressed. This condition of unfreedom arises as a consequence of being subject to the arbitrary or enormous power of men like Berlusconi, who presides over Italy with his control of government and the media, immense wealth, and infamous lack of self-restraint. Challenging our most cherished notions about liberty, Viroli argues that even if a power like Berlusconi's has been established in the most legitimate manner and people are not denied their basic rights, the mere existence of such power makes those subject to it unfree. Most Italians, following the lead of their elites, lack the minimal moral qualities of free people, such as respect for the Constitution, the willingness to obey laws, and the readiness to discharge civic duties. As Viroli demonstrates, they exhibit instead the characteristics of servility, including flattery, blind devotion to powerful men, an inclination to lie, obsession with appearances, imitation, buffoonery, acquiescence, and docility. Accompanying these traits is a marked arrogance that is apparent among not only politicians but also ordinary citizens.
