Aş zice că ne stă din ce în ce mai mult în fire să căutăm transformarea. Oamenii afectează adesea o fericire pe care n-o simt; oamenii a căror nevroză s-a transformat în nefericire nu sunt doar nefericiţi, ci şi convinşi că au eşuat. Partea vitală a acestei înclinaţii spre lumină este însă convingerea de nezdruncinat că dezastrele îşi găsesc până la urmă rezolvarea, că tragediile sunt adesea doar o fază, nu şi sfârşitul jocului. Cartea de faţă caută să scoată la lumină nobleţea ascunsă sub ponegrirea lui Howells. Se bazează pe o idee şi mai optimistă chiar, respectiv că finalurile fericite ale tragediilor au o demnitate mai presus de cea a finalurilor fericite ale comediilor, că nu numai transcend sentimentalismul la care face Howells aluzie, ci chiar oferă o satisfacţie mai preţioasă decât una necălită prin suferinţă. The divergence in practices and codes of moral belief and action present significant challenges but also offer opportunities to anthropologists for understanding social life. In this book, Monica Heintz explores these questions, drawing on case studies from Eastern Europe that encompass migration, religion, economic and social policies and paying particular attention to the way morality works in communities undergoing rapid social change. She uses these examples to reflect on the wider question of societal conflict and change, showing how they are driven by moral values. By highlighting the centrality of such values as engines for action and questioning the limits of universal moral values, she argues that anthropology has the capacity to shed light on the study of human morality more generally.
