Remembering the dead is a topic which connects various cultures and traditions. The reception of the African tradition of ancestorship is a theological enrichment in the ecumenical discussions all over the world. In our time, the exchange of gifts plays a great role in promoting unity of the Churches. Especially the concepts of African theology with the incomparable special position of Jesus Christ as "proto ancestor" are important for the interconfessional dialogues. The veneration of the ancestors in Africa can be a help to begin ecumenical discussions in this regional context on the question of the veneration of the saints. According to African tradition the ancestors also have influence on the process of purification. Therefore, the veneration of the ancestors contributes to providing answers to the ecumenical controversies about the understanding of the eschatological purification. Sentus Francis Dikwe SDS, born in 1980 in Morogoro, Tanzania, ordained priest of the Salvatorian Congregation. He attained doctorate in theology 2020 in Munster, Germany.

Martin Luthers Thesen gegen den Ablass gaben 1517 den Anstoß zur Reformation. Weniger bekannt ist die lange Vorgeschichte der Ablassverkündung in der spätmittelalterlichen Kirche. Der auf eine im Rahmen der Lutherdekade geförderte interdisziplinäre Tagung in Rom 2015 zurückgehende Band beleuchtet den Kontext des Ablassstreites vor dem Hintergrund der weitverbreiteten Ablasskampagnen, die schon in den beiden Jahrhunderten davor im Kirchenleben etabliert waren. Protagonisten der Ablassverkündung waren nicht nur die den Ablass ausstellenden Päpste und Bischöfe, sondern auch die Orden und diverse Laiengruppen, die die Erträgnisse in verschiedensten Bereichen – vom Brückenbau bis zur Versorgung von Notleidenden in Hospitälern – investierten. Untersuchungsschwerpunkt sind die theologischen, kirchenrechtlichen, sozialen, ökonomischen und kulturellen Aspekte des Ablasses und seiner Verkündung im Spätmittelalter. Ab dem 13. Jahrhundert entwickelten Theologen und Kanonisten die Lehre vom „Kirchenschatz". Kritik am Ablass und seinen Auswüchsen wurde schon früh geübt und von Jan Hus zu einem ersten Höhepunkt geführt. Die Statements des Runden Tischs eröffnen außerdem Perspektiven für den interkonfessionellen Dialog zum noch immer aktuellen Thema.

Vor 500 Jahren, im Sommer 1519, trafen Martin Luther, sein Wittenberger Kollege Andreas Bodenstein von Karlstadt und der Ingolstädter Theologe Johannes Eck in der Hofstube des herzoglichen Schlosses in Leipzig zu einem akademischen Streitgespräch zusammen. Dabei sollte es eigentlich um den Ablass gehen. Doch längst standen auch die reformatorische Lehre und ihre Konsequenzen für die damalige Kirche auf der Tagesordnung. Die Disputation lief auf die Frage hinaus, ob der Primat des römischen Papstes, der die Strukturen und die Lehre der abendländischen Kirche seit dem Mittelalter prägte, auf göttlichem oder nur menschlichem Recht beruhte. Eck bezichtigte Luther offen der hussitischen Ketzerei, dieser wiederum wurde sich seiner Distanz zur Papstkirche in Leipzig erst richtig bewusst. Der Band behandelt neben der theologischen Kontroverse auch das stadt- und landesgeschichtliche Umfeld der Disputation. [The Leipzig Disputation of 1519. A Theological Debate and its Importance for Early Reformation] 500 years ago, in summer 1519, Martin Luther, his Wittenberg fellow Andreas Bodenstein von Karlstadt, and the Ingolstadt theologian Johannes Eck met for an academic debate in the parlor of ducal Pleissenburg Castle in Leipzig. The discussion was supposed to focus on indulgence, however the reformatory teachings and their consequences for the then-church were long since on the agenda. The disputation amounted to the question, whether the Primate of the Roman Pope, who had been shaping the structures and teachings of the occidental church since medieval times, was based on divine or just human law. Eck openly accused Luther of Hussite heresy, who himself became only now fully aware of his distance to the papal church in Leipzig. Next to the theological controversy the volume also covers the historical environment of the disputation.

The sale of indulgences is considered to be the starting point of Martin Luther's Reformation. On the basis of the indulgence instructions the present book devotes its first part to the vagueness and inconsistencies of the indulgence as it was seen by Cardinal Cajetan, the leading Roman theologian in the time of Luther. It then deals with the dispute between Cajetan and Luther's writings. In its third part the book reaches out as far as the year 1522, when Cajetan, commenting on the Summa of Thomas Aquina, gives his final opinion on the indulgence. Presenting the theological confrontations on the indulgence, due attention is given to the conflict which had the greatest impact on the early Reformation time.
