"The collapse of the Habsburg monarchy in 1918 galvanized discussion about national identity in the new Republic of Austria. As Robert Pyrah shows in this thoroughly documented study, the complex identity politics of interwar Austria were played out in the theatres of Vienna, which enjoyed a cultural prominence rarely matched in other countries. By 1934, productions across the city were being co-opted to serve the newly patriotic cause of the Dollfuss and Schuschnigg regimes, and the Burgtheater, once known as the first German stage, had been transformed into a national theatre for Austria. Using case studies of key productions and a wealth of previously unseen archival material, Pyrah sheds new light on artistic and ideological developments throughout the period, including the neglected earlier years. Diese Monographie analysiert eingehend einen entscheidenden Abschnitt mitteleuropäischer Diplomatiegeschichte, in deren Mittelpunkt die sogenannte 'Österreichfrage' im Zeitraum von 1933-1936 steht. Österreich war damals nicht Subjekt, sondern Objekt im Spiel der europäischen Mächte, insbesondere des Deutschen Reiches und Italiens. Als solches war der kleine Alpenstaat wohl für das Gleichgewicht und den europäischen Frieden wichtig, aber kaum in der Lage eine selbstbestimmte Außenpolitik zu betreiben. Die deutsch-österreichischen Beziehungen waren vor allem vor dem Juliabkommen von politischer Gewalt überschattet und entsprachen über weite Strecken nicht normalen völkerrechtlichen Prinzipien. Österreich wurde von Hitler, der in dieser Frage weitgehend das Außenamt ausschaltete, als innenpolitisches Problem des Gesamtdeutschtums und nicht als Teil einer europäischen Frage gesehen. Da die Großmächte, besonders Italien, die Bedeutung für das europäische Gleichgewicht und damit auch für ihre eigene Sicherheit und Machtstellung erkannten, führte das Österreichproblem auch zu schwerwiegenden bilateralen Belastungen in Europa. Die Arbeit basiert weitgehend auf ungedruckten wie gedruckten Quellen aus italienischen, österreichischen, deutschen und vereinzelt auch französischen sowie britischen Archiven. Vor allem die noch wenig ausgewerteten italienischen Dokumente erweitern nicht nur die Kenntnis von außen- sondern auch von innenpolitischen Vorgängen im damaligen Österreich. Als durchgängiger Ansatz wurden die Interdependenzen der Mächte in der österreichischen Frage im gesamten europäischen Kontext gewählt.

During the 1930s, Austrian film production companies developed a process to navigate the competing demands of audiences in Nazi Germany and those found in broader Western markets. In Screening Transcendence, film historian Robert Dassanowsky explores how Austrian filmmakers during the Austrofascist period (1933–1938) developed two overlapping industries: "Aryanized" films for distribution in Germany, its largest market, and "Emigrantenfilm," which employed émigré and Jewish talent that appealed to international audiences. Through detailed archival research in both Vienna and the United States, Dassanowsky reveals what was culturally, socially, and politically at stake in these two simultaneous and overlapping film industries. Interwar Vienna was considered a bastion of radical socialist thought, and its reputation as "Red Vienna" has loomed large in both the popular imagination and the historiography of Central Europe. However, as Janek Wasserman shows in this book, a "Black Vienna" existed as well; its members voiced critiques of the postwar democratic order, Jewish inclusion, and Enlightenment values, providing a theoretical foundation for Austrian and Central European fascist movements. Looking at the complex interplay between intellectuals, the public, and the state, he argues that seemingly apolitical Viennese intellectuals, especially conservative ones, dramatically affected the course of Austrian history. While Red Viennese intellectuals mounted an impressive challenge in cultural and intellectual forums throughout the city, radical conservatism carried the day. Black Viennese intellectuals hastened the destruction of the First Republic, facilitating the establishment of the Austrofascist state and paving the way for Anschluss with Nazi Germany. Closely observing the works and actions of Viennese reformers, journalists, philosophers, and scientists, Wasserman traces intellectual, social, and political developments in the Austrian First Republic while highlighting intellectuals’ participation in the growing worldwide conflict between socialism, conservatism, and fascism. Vienna was a microcosm of larger developments in Europe—the rise of the radical right and the struggle between competing ideological visions. By focusing on the evolution of Austrian conservatism, Wasserman complicates post–World War II narratives about Austrian anti-fascism and Austrian victimhood.
