Antigone freut sich darauf, so sagt sie, nach der Tat zu sterben und mit ihrem lieben Bruder auf immer zusammenzuliegen. Ismene fordert Antigone auf, die Tat wenigstens heimlich zu begehen, Antigone weist das zurück. Ismene erklärt Antigone für unverständig.Das Einzugslied des Chores handelt vom Kampf um Theben. Ein gefährlicher Krieger näherte sich der Stadt, Adrast von Argos, mit dem Polyneikes sich verbündet hatte. Die Angreifer wollten die Türme der Stadt in Brand setzen, doch die Thebaner konnten sie zurückschlagen; dabei stützten sie sich auf die Hilfe der Götter Zeus und Ares. The volume focuses on the various representations of the Beyond in later Antiquity, a period of intense interaction and competition between various religious traditions and ideals of education. The concepts and images clustering around the Beyond form a crucial focal point for understanding the dynamics of religion and education in later Antiquity. Although Christianity gradually supersedes the pagan traditions, the literary representations of the Beyond derived from classical literature and transmitted through the texts read at school show a remarkable persistence: they influence Christian late antique writers and are still alive in medieval literature of the East and West. A specifically Christian Beyond develops only gradually, and coexists subsequently with pagan ideas, which in turn vary according to the respective literary and philosophical contexts. Thus, the various conceptualisations of the great existential unknown, serves here as a point of reference for mirroring the changes and continuities in Imperial and Late Antique religion, education, and culture, and opening up further perspectives into the Medieval world.

The choachytes (or morticians) of the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes provided a rich documentation linking the city of the living on one side of the Nile with the city of the dead on the other. The family archives of these choachytes deal to a large part with their professional role in serving the dead entrusted to their care, but they are also virtually our only source of information about the city of Thebes, whose physical remains were ruthlessly obliterated in the nineteenth century. This material constitute one end of a chain which links the temple statues of Amun's servants and descriptions of their houses on the one hand with their tombs and their tomb inventories on the other, allowing us to identify individual choachytes from their papers. The papyrological finds can thus provide an exact dating for objects that might otherwise be only dated to within several centuries, while the objects themselves and the tomb architecture provide a factual dimension to historical and legal documents which might otherwise remain flat and arid. It was in order to draw attention to the richness of all the constituent parts of this documentation that a number of scholars were invited to present their views on Graeco-Roman Thebes at a colloqium held from 9 to 11 September 1992 in Leiden, the Netherlands. The survey papers and communications presented at this colloqium are published here.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2006 im Fachbereich Weltgeschichte - Frühgeschichte, Antike, Note: 2,3, Universität Potsdam (Historisches Institut), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In Anlehnung an das Seminar „Alexander der Große“ steht im Mittelpunkt der zu schreibenden Hausarbeit der Aufstand Thebens – als eine der ersten militärischen Herausforderung Alexanders. Nachdem sich der junge Alexander bereits im Inneren des makedonischen Königreichs als neuer Thronfolger im Jahr 336 durchsetzte, musste er sich nun den von außen drohenden Gefahren in Südgriechenland stellen. Es soll im Folgenden aufgezeigt werden, warum der Aufstand in Theben ausbrach und wie der junge Makedonenkönig im Einzelnen der griechischen Abfallbewegung begegnete. Dafür werden zunächst die Gründe für den Ausbruch des Aufstandes erörtert sowie der tatsächliche Auslöser der Aufruhr dargestellt. Daran anschließend werden nähere Ausführungen zum Verlauf der Auseinandersetzung gemacht. Interessant ist hierbei, wie und mit welchen Maßnahmen sich Alexander durchsetzte. Abschließend werden die Folgen sowohl für Theben als auch für andere griechische Abgefallene näher beleuchtet. In diesem Abschnitt gilt insbesondere zu klären, welche Bedeutung die Niederschlagung des Aufstandes für Alexander hatte. Zur Literatur- und Quellenlage ist anzumerken, dass ich mich größtenteils auf die Ausführungen von Arrian stützen werde. Er gibt als einziger Autor, eine detaillierte Darstellung wie der Aufstand im Einzelnen verlief. Auf eine Einordnung der Quelle soll bewusst verzichtet werden, da im Rahmen des Seminars des Öfteren darauf eingegangen wurde. +++ Um die Gründe für den Aufstand in Theben näher zu er- und begründen, muss zunächst das Verhältnis zwischen Theben und Makedonien erläutert werden. Ausgangspunkt stellt die Entscheidungsschlacht in Chaironea im Frühjahr 338 dar, die für alle griechischen Stadtstaaten eine grundlegende Veränderung mit sich brachte. Nach dem Sieg über die Griechen, war Philipps primäres Ziel, die makedonische Hegemonie in Griechenland auszubauen. Seine neu gewonnene Machtstellung wurde institutionell durch die Gründung des Korinthischen Bundes im Jahr 337 abgesichert. Dieser mit den griechischen Staaten beschlossene Bundesvertrag beruhte auf den Prinzipien der Koiné eiréne. Ziel dieser griechischen Vereinigung war, die Erhaltung bzw. Herstellung des Friedens auf der Basis der Polisautonomie. Daneben hatte der Makedonenkönig Philipp weitere grundsätzliche Neuordnungen wie beispielsweise die Auflösung des athenischen Seebundes oder auch territoriale Veränderungen auf der Peloponnes vorgenommen. An dieser Stelle muss erwähnt werden, dass ich im Folgenden nicht alle ergriffenen Maßnahmen durch Philipp in Griechenland darstelle, sondern nur die in Theben durchgeführten Bestimmungen aufzeige.

The art of the emblem is a pan-European phenomenon which developed in Western and Central Europe in the early modern period. It adopted meanings and motifs from Antiquity and the Middle Ages as part of a general humanistic impulse. Technological developments in printing that permitted the combination of letterpress with woodblock, and later copperplate, images, ensured that the emblem spread rapidly by way of printed collections. With time, emblematic ideas moved beyond Europe, conveying their insights and wisdom in the compact form of the book. These same books came to influence artists and designers working in the decoration of buildings, furniture, and household items, so that emblems entered personal life; they infiltrated festive culture, too. In such environments beyond the book, emblems were transported, adapted, and embedded in new functional contexts shaped by social, political, or religious conditions, but also by architectonical and regional art historical parameters. The results of these transformations are often of an intricate and complex meaning. The combination of word and image that constitutes the emblem still has resonance in contemporary art and architecture. The study of emblems allows us to look back at the collaborative endeavours of creative minds of earlier times from across Europe and beyond. At a time when that continent is under strain, and the world in general seeks to come to terms with globalization, emblems allow reflection on strongly shared cultural values and connections.

Die drei flavischen Epen bilden keine monolithische Einheit: Valerius Flaccus, Statius und Silius Italicus haben unterschiedliche Auffassungen von der Form und Funktion epischen Erzählens. Die vorliegende Studie untersucht, welche persona des epischen Erzählers aus einem jeden dieser Werke spricht und wie die dargestellten Sänger- und Prophetenfiguren die Haltung dieses Erzählers widerspiegeln. Dabei zeigt sich auch, dass die Interaktion zwischen dem Erzähler und der von ihm dargestellten Welt dynamischer ist als häufig angenommen. Die flavischen Epen erscheinen als das Produkt einer Zeit, die mehr von Wandlung als von Gleichförmigkeit bestimmt ist und die immer neue literarische Antworten auf ihre sich ändernden Herausforderungen verlangt: Während Valerius Flaccus in seinem Epos den richtigen Weg zwischen Vergessen und Erinnern sucht, um in ein neues „episches Zeitalter“ aufzubrechen, stellt Statius jede Fähigkeit des Epos, bleibende Erinnerungen an Ruhmestaten zu schaffen, in Frage. Silius Italicus nimmt eine moderatere Position ein, die einen neuen Ausgleich zwischen Erinnern und Vergessen schafft.
