Witchcraft and magic are topics of enduring interest for many reasons. The main one lies in their extraordinary interdisciplinarity: anthropologists, folklorists, historians, and more have contributed to build a body of work of extreme variety and consistence. Of course, this also means that the subjects themselves are not easy to assess. In a very general way, we can define witchcraft as a supernatural means to cause harm, death, or misfortune, while magic also belongs to the field of supernatural, or at least esoteric knowledge, but can be used to less dangerous effects (e.g., divination and astrology). In Western civilization, however, the witch hunt has set a very peculiar perspective in which diabolical witchcraft, the invention of the Sabbat, the persecution of many thousands of (mostly) female and (sometimes) male presumed witches gave way to a phenomenon that is fundamentally different from traditional witchcraft. This Special Issue of Religions dedicated to Witchcraft, Demonology, and Magic features nine articles that deal with four different regions of Europe (England, Germany, Hungary, and Italy) between Late Medieval and Modern times in different contexts and social milieus. Far from pretending to offer a complete picture, they focus on some topics that are central to the research in those fields and fit well in the current “cumulative concept of Western witchcraft” that rules out all mono-causality theories, investigating a plurality of causes.

Despite various poststructuralist rejections of the idea of a singular author-genius, the question of a textual archetype that can be assigned to a named author is still a common scholarly phantasm. The Romantic idea that an author created a text or even a work autonomously is transferred even to pre-modern literature today. This ignores the fact that the transmission of medieval and early modern literature creates variances that could not be justified by means of singular authorships. The present volume offers new theoretical approaches from English, German, and Scandinavian studies to provide a historically more adequate approach to the question of authorship in premodern literary cultures. Authorship is no longer equated with an extra-textual entity, but is instead considered a narratological, inner- and intertextual function that can be recognized in the retrospectively established beginnings of literature as well as in the medial transformation of texts during the early days of printing. The volume is aimed at interested scholars of all philologies, especially those dealing with the Middle Ages or Early Modern Period.

To what extent were practitioners of magic inspired by fictional accounts of their art? In how far did the daunting narratives surrounding legendary magicians such as Theophilus of Adana, Cyprianus of Antioch, Johann Georg Faust or Agrippa of Nettesheim rely on real-world events or practices? Fourteen original case studies present material from late antiquity to the twenty-first century and explore these questions in a systematic manner. By coining the notion of ‘fictional practice’, the editors discuss the emergence of novel, imaginative types of magic from the nineteenth century onwards when fiction and practice came to be more and more intertwined or even fully amalgamated. This is the first comparative study that systematically relates fiction and practice in the history of magic.

Schätzungsweise 60 000 tödlich endende Hexenprozesse in Europa haben nicht nur in Prozessakten Spuren hinterlassen. Im Bewusstsein der Zeitgenossen – und in der Literatur – blieben sie noch lange nach den großen Verfolgungswellen präsent. Wenn man sich das markante Geschehen heute ins Gedächtnis ruft, sind neue Einblicke in die Literaturgeschichte und in Konstanten des Empfindens von Bedrohung möglich. Dies zeigt das Beispiel Goethes Faust: Das Drama enthält nicht nur die bekannten Hexenimaginationen, sondern auch viel mehr historische Wirklichkeit als bisher wahrgenommen worden ist. Und weil es eines der besterforschten Werke ist, kann man es als Präzedenzfall für verschwiegene Spuren in der Literatur(wissenschaft) betrachten. In der Studie wird Goethes Wissen um die Hexenverfolgung ermittelt und dessen Manifestation im Faust rekonstruiert. Einerseits führt dies zu einer an vielen Stellen neuen Interpretation des Werkes. Andererseits stößt man auf beredte Leerstellen in der Literaturwissenschaft, die Sozialgeschichte rezipiert und schreibt.

In seine Vorlesungen streute Melanchthon viele Anekdoten aus Antike und Literatur und aus Begegnungen etwa mit Dürer, Luther, Kurfürst Friedrich d. Weisen ein. Sie wurden von Studenten aufgeschrieben und sind meist nur handschriftlich überliefert. Diese Anekdoten und Geschichten, als "Dicta Melanthonis" bezeichnet, werden hier erstmals in Übersetzung samt Kommentar vorgestellt. Sie zeigen eine fast völlig unbekannte Seite Melanchthons: den großen Geschichtenerzähler. [Sunday lectures and anecdotes] During almost all of his time in Wittenberg, Melanchthon gave lectures on Sundays, especially for foreign students who could not understand the German service. For his explanations of the Bible text he drew from his profound theological, historical and biological knowledge. By way of example, the volume contains translations of three of these Sunday lectures, including comments. Melanchthon sprinkled his lectures with various anecdotes from the ancient world, from literature and from encounters with Dürer, Luther, and Elector Frederick the Wise. They were written down by students and have mostly only been handed down in handwriting. These anecdotes and stories, known as "Dicta Melanthonis", are presented here for the first time in translation and with commentary. They show an almost completely unknown side of Melanchthon: the one of a great storyteller.
