Die beiden Hansestädte Bremen und Hamburg haben eine lange und wechselvolle Geschichte mit einer entsprechend vielfältigen Münzprägung. Entsprechend groß ist das numismatische Interesse. Im Jahr 834 wurden in Hamburg erstmals Münzen geschlagen. Das Münzrecht, verliehen durch den Kaiser, hatte der Erzbischof zu Hammaburg inne. Später verkauften die Grafen von Holstein ihre Münzstätte an die Stadt Hamburg, der damit erlaubt war, eigene Münzen zu schlagen. Dabei handelte es sich überwiegend um Brakteaten. 1435 wurde der Hamburgischen Münze das Recht zur Prägung von Goldmünzen, den Gulden, durch Kaiser Sigismund verliehen. 1553 wurden in der Münzstätte erstmals Taler und Portugaleser geprägt. Am 24. Mai 1541 erteilte Kaiser Karl V. der Stadt Bremen 1541 das Privileg, Münzen zu prägen und in Umlauf zu bringen. Nun wurden Goldgulden, Taler in verschiedenen Werten und andere Sorten nach der Reichsmünzordnung geprägt, ohne dass, wie auch sonst im Norden, deren Vorschriften im Detail eingehalten worden wären. Für den lokalen Zahlungsverkehr wurden weiterhin Grote und Sware geprägt. Die 2-Grote-Stücke entsprachen dem Groschen der Münzordnung des niedersächsischen Reichskreises, der die damals oberste Münzaufsicht übernommen hatte. Bis auf Witten und Sware tragen die Bremer Münzen nun auf der Rückseite die Symbole des Reichs. Durch die Vielzahl der umlaufenden Sorten und ihre ständig wechselnden Umrechnungen war das Münzwesen nicht nur in Bremen verworren. Grundlage des Handels war der einigermaßen zuverlässig ausgemünzte Reichstaler. Grote und Schwaren blieben bis 1872 die gängigen bremischen Scheidemünzen. Am 1. Juli 1872 verlor Bremen seine Münzhoheit im Zuge der Gründung des Deutschen Kaiserreichs.
