Recent debates have used the concept of “transnational history” to broaden research on historical subjects that transcend national boundaries and encourage a shift away from official inter-state interactions to institutions, groups, and actors that have been obscured. This approach proves particularly fruitful for the dynamic field of global gender and women’s history. By looking at the restless lives and work of women’s activists in informal border-crossings, ephemeral NGOs, the lower management of established international organizations, and other global networks, this volume reflects the potential of a new perspective that allows for a more adequate analysis of transnational activities. By pointing out cultural hierarchies, the vicissitudes of translation and re-interpretation, and the ambiguity of intercultural exchange, this volume demonstrates the critical potential of transnational history. It allows us to see the limits of universalist and cosmopolitan claims so dear to many historical actors and historians.

The German Revolution of November 1918 is nowadays largely forgotten outside Germany. It is generally regarded as a failure even by those who have heard of it, a missed opportunity which paved the way for the rise of the Nazis and the catastrophe to come. Robert Gerwarth argues here that to view the German Revolution in this way is a serious misjudgement. Not only did it bring down the authoritarian monarchy of the Hohenzollern, it also brought into being the first ever German democracy in an amazingly bloodless way. Focusing on the dramatic events between the last months of the First World War in 1918 and Hitler's Munich Putsch of 1923, Robert Gerwarth illuminates the fundamental and deep-seated ways in which the November Revolution changed Germany. In doing so, he reminds us that, while it is easy with the benefit of hindsight to write off the 1918 Revolution as a 'failure', this failure was not somehow pre-ordained. In 1918, the fate of the German Revolution remained very much an open book.

The Berlin council movement of 1919–20 proves that there was a left alternative beyond Social Democracy and Stalinism in the German Revolution. The movement combined an impressive mass mobilisation with extensive socialist and democratic aspirations that pointed far beyond the Weimar order. Berlin was not just the centre of the November Revolution of 1918, but also the most important arena of the Second Revolution that followed. For the first time, the movement is analysed here in all its diversity and on the basis of a broad range of sources. Beside the workers' and factory councils, it also includes councils of students, women, the unemployed and intellectuals. Central events such as the 1919 general strike and the struggle against the Kapp Putsch of 1920 are also examined.

This volume offers an analysis of the intertwined relationship between public health and the biopolitical dimensions of state- and nation building in Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe. It challenges the idea of diverging paths towards modernity of Europe’s western and eastern countries by not only identifying ideas, discourses and practices of “solving” public health issues that were shared among political regimes in the region; it also uncovers the ways in which, since the late nineteenth century, the biopolitical organization of the state both originated from and shaped an emerging common European framework. The broad range of local case studies stretches from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czechoslovakia, the GDR, Greece and Hungary, to Poland, Serbia, the Soviet Union, and Yugoslavia. Taking a time span that begins in the late nineteenth century and ends in the post-socialist era, the book makes an original contribution to scholarship examining the relationship between public health, medicine, and state- and nation building in Europe’s long twentieth century. Close readings and dense descriptions of local discourses and practices of “public” health help to reflect on the transnational and global entanglements in the sphere of public health. In doing so, this volume facilitates comparisons on the regional, European, and global level.

Juni 1933 (Gesetz uber die Aufhebung der im Kampf fur die nationale Erhebung erlittenen Dienststrafen und sonstigen Massregelungen) bestimmte die vollumfangliche Rehabilitierung solcher Beamter, die vor 1933 aus nationalsozialistischer Gesinnung heraus Disziplinarstrafen oder sonstige Massregelungen aufgrund ihres Eintretens gegen die Weimarer Republik erfahren hatten. Mit dem Erlass der Amnestie verdeutlichten die Nationalsozialisten, dass auch fur die Beamtenschaft eine neue Ara angebrochen war. Das Gesetz wurde als eine einseitige Zweckamnestie und ein Spezialpardon fur die alten Nationalsozialisten in der Beamtenschaft konzipiert. Nadja Krull untersucht diese Rechtsvorschriften in der Theorie, aber auch ihre Anwendung in der Praxis.

Das NS-Regime versuchte schon früh, sich die Religionsgemeinschaften gefügig zu machen. Trotz Einzelner und kleiner Gruppen, die gegen den Strom schwammen, folgten gerade die großen Kirchen anfangs bereitwillig. Doch der wachsende staatliche Terror im Zuge der »Gleichschaltung«, der bereits Mitte 1933 zu einem Verbot in Preußen und zur Verfolgung der Zeugen Jehovas führte, zwang diejenigen, die an einem unverfälschten Glauben – und seinen ethischen Konsequenzen – festhalten wollten, zur Selbstbehauptung und zu Formen der Gegenwehr. Trotz mehrerer Hundert Berliner, die für längere oder kurze Zeit ihrer Glaubenshaltung wegen inhaftiert wurden, war es insgesamt doch nur eine Minderheit, die, über die innerkirchliche Abwehr hinausgehend, am Schicksal aller Verfolgten Anteil nahm. Die Veröffentlichung geht anhand von Prozessunterlagen, Gestapo- und SD-Quellen, zeitgenössischen Berichten und nicht zuletzt über einhundert Befragungen von NS-Gegnern dem Weg jener Mitglieder von Religionsgemeinschaften nach, die Verfolgung, Haft, ja den Tod erlitten. Jenseits einseitiger Glorifizierung, aber auch fern pauschaler Verurteilung des Wegs der Kirchen entwickelt der Autor ein facettenreiches und durch den Perspektivwechsel der Quellen sehr lebendiges Bild der Ereignisse. Dabei wird dem Engagement vieler couragierter Frauen und Jugendlicher an der Basis der Gemeinden besondere Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet.
