Welche Zeitstrukturen und Sichtweisen auf die Zeit lassen sich in Filmen finden Mit diesen Fragen beschäftigte sich das Seminar „Einführung in das wissenschaftliche Arbeiten am Beispiel von Texten und Filmen mit dem Thema Zeit“. Für das Thema der Hausarbeit wählte der Autor den Film Terminator 3 - Rebellion der Maschinen , den dritten Teil der Science-Fiction-Trilogie „Terminator“. Dieser Film beschäftigt sich auf vielfältige Weise mit dem Thema Zeit, sodass sich anhand dieses Beispielfilms ein ideales Untersuchungsobjekt zum thematischen Inhalt des Seminars finden lässt. Diese Hausarbeit hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, den dritten Teil wissenschaftlich zu untersuchen. Die Terminator-Reihe ist mit diesem Film vorerst zum Ende gelangt, ein vierter Teil ist in Planung. Terminator 3 ist, wie seine beiden vorangegangenen Teile, dem Filmgenre des Science-Fiction zuzuordnen. Die Gattungsbezeichnung “Science Fiction“ wurde 1926 von Hugo Gernsback geprägt , der als Herausgeber des amerikanischen Magazins “Amazing Stories“ den Begriff “Scientification“ für dessen Inhalt verwendete (vgl. Seeßlen, Jung, 2003, Bd. 2, S. 18 f.). Die Inhalte des Magazins orientierten sich, neben neueren Geschichten, auch an den Erzählungen Herbert Georg Wells und Jules Vernes (vgl. ebd., S. 19). Beide gelten „Als die eigentlichen literarischen Klassiker...“ (Hellmann, 1983, S. 7), „...die mit ihren phantastischen Romanen den Grundstock für nachfolgende Generationen von SF-Autoren legten.“ (ebd.). Das Thema Technik wird bei ihnen zum bestimmenden Element (vgl. ebd.), da die Technologie im Kontext der „Industriellen Revolution“, „...in den Stand unbegrenzter zukünftiger Möglichkeiten...“ (Seeßlen, Jung, 2003, Bd. 2, S. 12) versetzt schien. So brachte dann eben jene industrielle Revolution und der sich aus ihr entwickelnde reale Fortschritt das Medium Film „Gegen Ende des vorigen Jahrhunderts [...] in die technische Reifephase.“ (Hellmann, 1983, S. 13).

A glance at criticism of Ayer’s films supports this claim: While many call him a "macho helmer", Ayer is equally often recognized for his instinctive feel for male relationships, their language and intimacy. This thesis will review David Ayer’s stories, screenplays and films focussing on masculine camaraderie, homosocial bonding and the relationships of its characters in an attempt to get a deeper sense of the ambivalence between machismo and male-male affection that seems to characterize Ayer’s projects.
