Starting with the premise that aesthetic choices reveal the ideological stances of translators, the author of this research monograph examines works of fiction by postcolonial African authors writing in English or French, the genesis and reception of their works, and the translation of each one into French or English. Texts include those by Nuruddin Farah from Somalia, Abdourahman Ali Waberi from Djibouti, Jean-Marie Adiaffi from Côte d’Ivoire, Ayi Kwei Armah from Ghana, Chenjerai Hove from Zimbabwe, and Assia Djebar from Algeria, and their translations by Jacqueline Bardolph, Jeanne Garane, Brigitte Katiyo, Jean-Pierre Richard, Josette and Robert Mane, and Dorothy Blair. The author highlights the aural poetics of these works, explores the sound motifs underlying their literary power, and shows how each is articulated with the writer’s literary heritage. She then embarks on a close examination of each translator’s background, followed by a rich analysis of their treatments of sound. The translators’ strategies for addressing sound motifs are contextualized in the larger framework of postcolonial literatures and changing reading materialities.

The Oxford Studies in Postcolonial Literatures series offers stimulating and accessible introductions to definitive topics and key genres and regions within the rapidly diversifying field of postcolonial literary studies in English. This volume offers an overview of contemporary Eastern African writing in English since the mid-twentieth century. It takes a fresh look at what has been an under-represented regional literary tradition within what continues to be an under-represented continental literary tradition. In particular, it broadens the scope of such an overview, complementing the extant monographs on well-known Eastern African writers such as Ngũgĩ to include a host of more recent, less-publicized novelists, dramatists, and poets. It extends the geographical range of existing studies from the familiar triad of Kenyan, Ugandan, and Tanzanian traditions of writing in English, to include the lesser-known Somali, Ethiopian, or Sudanese, or Mauritian or Madagascan traditions. Rather than simply addressing national traditions or broad thematic bundles, the volume treats works as literatures of a region: that is, as literatures of place and space. Eastern African Literatures stresses the formative role of space, place and geography in fashioning the fabric of social interaction, whether individual or collective, in generating history, in moulding identities, and as a consequence in defining the shape of the future. The 'spatial' perspectives allow the 'proximate' rather than the 'distant' influence of literary art to come into view. Proximate modes of literary communication, arising out of residual but vibrant traditions of oral communication, blend with contemporary media to produce hybrid genres of proximity specific to Eastern African literary production. In this way, the book also makes a contribution to the ongoing theorization of literary and cultural innovation in the cultures of the Global South.

Cette présente étude s‘intéresse aux représentations de la mort dans le roman africain francophone, notamment aux symboles, aux espaces, aux personnages ou encore aux formes de la mort. Contrairement à d‘autres travaux, cet ouvrage met en évidence non seulement l‘influence de la culture négro-africaine et occidentale, mais aussi celle de la culture islamique. De meme, il s‘agit d‘une analyse synchronique et diachronique qui se concentre sur le caractère hybride des représentations de la mort, et qui prend aussi en considération leur évolution dans le roman africain francophone. Dans ce contexte, ce travail propose de répondre à plusieurs questions. D‘une part, comment les romanciers africains réutilisent-ils les représentations de la mort négro-africaines, occidentales et/ou islamiques ? Comment les réactualisent-ils ? Les romancières africaines développent-elles des représentations de la mort spécifiques par rapport à leurs collègues masculins ? D‘autre part, existe-t-il diverses facons de représenter la mort selon les générations auxquelles appartiennent les auteurs africains ? Y a-t-il une évolution depuis la première génération de prosateurs ou faut-il, au contraire, reconnaitre des similitudes chez l‘ensemble des écrivains africains ?
