Les problèmes de la traduction de la poésie ne sont pas les mêmes que ceux des diverses formes de discours. Or, c’est remarquable, aucun des théoriciens de la traduction ne semble se poser cette question, ni Steiner, ni Ricœur, qui ne pensent qu’en termes de significations, ni même Antoine Berman. Seul Walter Benjamin a cherché à le faire, dans son essai fameux La Tâche du traducteur, mais ces pages obscures relèvent d’une métaphysique de la parole, non d’une analyse des traductions comme elles existent. Les essais qui constituent L’Autre Langue à portée de voix ont tous pour origine la conviction que la traduction de la poésie est quelque chose d’autre que la traduction ordinaire. Par exemple « La traduction au sens large » montre qu’un poète ne traduit pas un poème par un texte de même longueur sur la page d’en face mais par des expériences qu’il poursuit dans ses propres œuvres : « le Corbeau » de Poe est « traduit » par le « Sonnet en –yx » de Mallarmé.

Et je me pose cette question : ces perceptions de la neige qui peuvent donc être différentes et sans doute même, en des cas, difficilement compatibles – la neige traversée dans l'Himalaya par un moine tibétain aux pieds presque nus, celle de nos enfants à leurs jeux, bien couverts de grosse laine – s'avoisinent-elles, parfois, ont-elles alors les unes avec les autres la même sorte de rapports qu'ont entre eux – très vifs, on dirait confiants – les flocons que rapproche une ombre de vent dans un instant de lumière ? Penchée chacune au balcon de sa propre langue, se tendent-elles parfois la main ? Y. B. Yves Bonnefoy est professeur au Collège de France.
