Excerpt from The Ethnology of the Salinan Indians As data on many important points was entirely missing, due to the almost complete loss of aboriginal culture among the present Indians of the northern missions, material has been incorporated from various other sources. Through the courtesy of the Bureau of American Ethnology access has been had to certain ethnological notes collected by Dr. Henshaw in 1884 from informants now deceased, and other items of importance have been gleaned from the writings of various travellers and visitors to the missions. Notable among the latter is Alexander S. Taylor, who visited the missions in 1856, sent many of his manuscripts and other material of the mission period to wash lugton, and recounted his observations in The California Farmer in 1860. Excerpt from Index to Bulletins 1-100 of the Bureau of American Ethnology: With Index to Contributions to North American Ethnology, Introductions, and Miscellaneous Publications This volume was prepared by the late Dr. Bonnerj ea after he had completed an index of the Annual Reports of the Bureau of Amer ican Ethnology, published as the paper accompanying the Forty eighth Annual Report, Washington, 1933. The present work contains an index of Bulletins 1 through 100 and of other publications of the Bureau. Unfortunately its printing has long been delayed because of insufficient funds. Even at this late date, however, it will prove useful to students and the general reader. The style followed by the author is essentially the same, with slight additions and modifications, as that used for the index to the Annual Reports of the Bureau. The present volume is divided into five parts. The first is devoted to a subject index for the Bulletins; the second is an index to the authors and titles of the Bulletins; the third provides an alphabetical index for all the plates and text figures in the Bulletins; the fourth is an index to the ethnological material to be found in the Contributions to North American Eth nology, the Introductions, and the Miscellaneous Publications of the Bureau; and the fifth is an index to the authors and titles of the last three series. Excerpt from History and Ethnology IT is the aim of this essay to show the importance of ethnology, and especially of recent develop ments of that science, to history. During the last ten years there has been in progress, rudely hindered but not stopped by the war, a movement which has brought the two disciplines into much closer relationship than would have been possible under the conditions which guided the study of ethnology twenty or thirty years ago. At this more remote period anthropology - I use the term anthropology advisedly - was wholly under the dominance of a crude evolutionary standpoint. The aim of the anthropologist was to work out a scheme of human progress according to which language, social organisation, religion, and material arts had developed through the action of certain principles or laws. It was assumed that the manifold peoples of the earth represented stages in this process of evolution, and it was supposed that by the comparative study of the culture of these different peoples it would be possible to formulate the laws by which the process of evolu tion had been directed and governed.
