Excerpt from The Ethnology of the Salinan Indians As data on many important points was entirely missing, due to the almost complete loss of aboriginal culture among the present Indians of the northern missions, material has been incorporated from various other sources. Through the courtesy of the Bureau of American Ethnology access has been had to certain ethnological notes collected by Dr. Henshaw in 1884 from informants now deceased, and other items of importance have been gleaned from the writings of various travellers and visitors to the missions. Notable among the latter is Alexander S. Taylor, who visited the missions in 1856, sent many of his manuscripts and other material of the mission period to wash lugton, and recounted his observations in The California Farmer in 1860. Be tween these forbidding monographs and the legends of Fenimore Cooper, what is there then to read for a girl who is going to spend her life among Indians or, in fact, for anyone who just wants to know more about Indians? From these considerations, among others, this book was conceived. The idea of writing about the life of the Indian for the General Reader is not novel, to be sure, to anthropologists.
