Education in Revolutionary Struggles introduces us to the fascinating world of Latin American educational thought in the third quarter of the 20th century. It discusses the contributions of three of the most distinguished intellectuals of the period – Iván Illich, Paulo Freire and Ernesto Guevara – and more specifically their answers to the eternal challenge: What is – or should be – the role of education in the profound structural and/or revolutionary transformation of our societies? The first part of the book identifies the cultural, economic and political context of the revolutionary years in Latin America. This historical framework is of particular interest because it is the setting for the intellectual and educational debates in which these three thinkers took part. The second part, the heart of the book, expounds in depth how Iván Illich, Paulo Freire and Ernesto Guevara contributed to understanding of how education is linked to the transformation of society. The third and final part highlights the most fertile dimensions of the educational thought of Iván Illich, Paulo Freire and Ernesto Guevara – deschooling, liberation education and revolutionary education respectively – and analyses the points where their conceptions of "education in revolutionary struggles" converged, complemented one another or diverged.

No lançamento da primeira edição deste livro em um evento acadêmico realizado na Universidade Federal do Oeste do Pará, pude falar a respeito do conteúdo da obra e detalhar alguns de seus aspectos, especialmente os que se relacionam com parte da trajetória de minha vida, quando fui jogador de futebol das categorias de base e profissional de um grande clube de futebol do cenário nacional. Também expliquei que o livro é resultante de minha tese de doutorado e que, portanto, não poderia ser apenas uma representação particular das experiências vividas por mim acerca do que ocorre no ambiente futebolístico, dentro e fora do campo, mas que desenvolve, também, reflexões mais histórico-sociológico-políticas e pedagógicas sobre a formação do jogador profissional do esporte bretão. O mesmo se passou quando fui convidado por uma livraria, localizada na cidade de Santarém, no estado do Pará, para apresentar esta obra ao público em geral. Um livro como este, apesar de seu cunho acadêmico, expressa, também, as conquistas e vicissitudes, os avanços e recuos, os sonhos e os desafios de e um jovem que deixa sua casa, na mais tenra idade, para viver no internato de um clube esportivo, em busca de um sonho de profissionalização futebolística, como milhares de jovens do mundo e do Brasil. Apresenta, porém, preocupação com questões históricas, sociais, políticas e educacionais específicas relativas à formação do jogador de futebol profissional, reveladas "sem cortes", especialmente por abordar a opressão – mas, também, o eventual e possível processo de conscientização – inerente nas relações de poder que se manifestam nos bastidores esportivos, desde os processos desenvolvidos nas "escolinhas" (comerciais) de futebol, até os que ocorrem no interior dos grandes clubes, que são também formadores de atletas.
