The CBM experiment (Compressed Baryonic Matter), one of the main experiments of the future FAIR accelerator facility (Darmstadt, Germany), aims in studying the phase diagram of nuclear matter in the region of high baryonic densities and moderate temperatures. Among the core physics goals is the study of the production and propagation of open charm particles, like D-mesons (particles containing one charm quark and one light quark) in heavy ion collisions. The measurements of these charmed mesons require the use of an excellent precision vertex detector. The present thesis is a contribution to the design and development of this detection device called MVD (Micro Vertex Detector). It is focused on three different parts. The first one concerns the experimental characterisation of the response of MAPS (Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors) sensors, composing the MVD detector stations, to the passage of charged particles. The second deals with the development of a realistic detector response model for the MVD detector. The last part focuses on a detailed feasibility study of open charm particle measurements in heavy ion collisions. The results demonstrate the feasibility of open charm particle measurements and allow assessing the expected performances and the limitations of the experiment.

The compressed baryonic matter experiment (CBM) will explore the behaviour of nuclear matter at extreme densities using Gold-Gold or proton-Gold collisions. The Micro Vertex Detector (MVD) is the CBM instrument closest to the collisions and is being designed using CMOS pixel sensors. The high-ionization particles generated by these collisions, such as gold or carbon ions and protons, may introduce radiation effects into the MVD sensors, such as: single-event effects (SEE), total ionization dose (TID) effects and displacement damages. In this thesis, we derive a method to implement radiation-hardening-by-design (RHBD) without compromising the essential features of the CMOS circuits, essentially its size. Using dedicated simulations and considering critical functionalities, we selectively introduced RHDB in two digital parts of the MVD sensor prototype, hardening them considerably against SEE : the read-out architecture and a phase-locked loop circuit.

A First Level Trigger Approach For The Cbm Experiment written by Christian Alexander Steinle and has been published by disserta Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Science categories.
In view of the very heavy CBM experiment constraints on the first level trigger, no conventional trigger is obviously applicable. Hence a fast trigger algorithm with the goal of realization in reconfigurable hardware had to be developed to fulfil all requirements of the experiment. In this connection the general Hough transform, which is already utilized in several other experiments, is used as a basis. This approach constitutes further a global method for tracking, which transforms all particle interaction points with the detector stations by means of a defined formula into a parameter space corresponding to the momentum of the particle tracks. This formula is of course developed especially for the given environment of CBM and defines thus the core of the applied three dimensional Hough transform. As the main focus of attention is furthermore on the realization of the needed data throughput, the necessary complex formula calculations give reason to outsource predefined formula results in look-up tables. This circumstance offers then collaterally the possibility to utilize any other sufficiently precise method like Runge-Kutta of fourth order for example to compute these look-up tables, because this computation can be evidently done offline without any effect on the Hough transform's processing speed. For algorithm simulation purposes the CBMROOT framework provides the module htrack', which is written in the programming language C++. This module includes many analyses for the determination of algorithm parameters, which can be even executed automatically to some extent. In addition to this, there are of course also analyses for the measurement of the algorithm's quality as well as for the individual rating of each partial step of the algorithm. Consequently the milestone of a customizable level one tracking algorithm, which can be used without any specific knowledge, is now obtained. Besides this, the investigated concepts are explicitly considered in the implement

c Societ` a Italiana di Fisica / Springer-Verlag 2008 The 11th Workshop on The Physics of Excited Nucleons, NSTAR 2007, was held at the University of Bonn, Germany,fromSeptember5–8,2007.ItwasthelatestofaseriesofsuccessfulconferencesattheRensselaerPolytechnic Institute (1988), Florida State University (1994 and 2005), Je?erson Lab (1995 and 2000), INT Seattle (1996), GWU ? Washington (1997), ECT Trento (1998), Mainz (2001), Pittsburgh (2002) and the LPSC Grenoble (2004). A Baryon Resonance Analysis Group (BRAG) meeting immediately before the workshop focused especially on the physical meaning of bare and dressed scattering matrix singularities. A focus workshop on? photoproduction rounded o? the NSTAR 2007. The goal of NSTAR 2007 was to bring together experts on all areas of physics relevant to baryon spectroscopy, both in experiment and theory. Latest results were presented in 30 plenary talks and 34 parallel contributions, the proceedings of which are collected in this volume. The workshop was attended by 123 scientists of 41 universities and laboratories from 16 countries. Exciting new high-precision data were shown from facilities in Asia, the US and Europe, e.g. BES, BNL, COSY, ELSA, GRAAL, JLab, MAMI and LEPS. Large-acceptance detectors provide complete angular distributions in many reaction channels. Particular emphasis is put on the measurement of single and double polarisation observables such that many new polarization measurements can be expected in forthcoming meetings.
