Enhancing Situation Awareness (SA) is a major design goal for projects in many fields, including aviation, ground transportation, air traffic control, nuclear power, and medicine, but little information exists in an integral format to support this goal. Designing for Situation Awareness helps designers understand how people acquire and interpret information in complex settings and recognize the factors that undermine this process. Designing to support operator SA reduces the incidence of human error, which has been found to occur largely due to failures in SA. Whereas many previous human factors efforts have focused on design at the perceptual and surface feature level, SA-oriented design focuses on the operator's information needs and cognitive processes as they juggle to integrate information from many sources and achieve multiple competing goals. Thus it addresses design from a system's perspective. By applying theoretical and empirical information on SA to the system design process, human factors practitioners can create designs to support SA across a wide variety of domains and design issues. This book serves as a helpful reference to that end.

Enhancing situation awareness (SA) is a major design goal for projects in many fields, including aviation, ground transportation, air traffic control, nuclear power, medicine, space, and systems maintenance. Many of the errors and failures that have been found to occur in complex systems are the result of failures in SA. The creation of SA-oriented system designs should directly reduce the incidence of such problems. However, little information exists in an integrated format to support the designer in creating systems that support SA. "Designing for Situation Awareness" provides a means for creating the truly user-centered system designs that are needed in today's complex world. Based on theoretical and empirical knowledge on SA, "Designing for Situation Awareness" provides methodology and design guidance for creating systems that will keep operator SA high in order to support real-time decision-making and performance requirements. This book is directed at designers and human factors researchers and practitioners in a wide variety of fields, and is liberally illustrated with actual design examples. It also supports graduate level teaching on situation awareness and design, and is relevant to human factors professionals in both the U.S. and Europe.

Motivation for the Book This book seeks to establish the state of the art in the cyber situational awareness area and to set the course for future research. A multidisciplinary group of leading researchers from cyber security, cognitive science, and decision science areas elab orate on the fundamental challenges facing the research community and identify promising solution paths. Today, when a security incident occurs, the top three questions security admin istrators would ask are in essence: What has happened? Why did it happen? What should I do? Answers to the ?rst two questions form the core of Cyber Situational Awareness. Whether the last question can be satisfactorily answered is greatly de pendent upon the cyber situational awareness capability of an enterprise. A variety of computer and network security research topics (especially some sys tems security topics) belong to or touch the scope of Cyber Situational Awareness. However, the Cyber Situational Awareness capability of an enterprise is still very limited for several reasons: • Inaccurate and incomplete vulnerability analysis, intrusion detection, and foren sics. • Lack of capability to monitor certain microscopic system/attack behavior. • Limited capability to transform/fuse/distill information into cyber intelligence. • Limited capability to handle uncertainty. • Existing system designs are not very “friendly” to Cyber Situational Awareness.

Developed by the leading scientists in the field, Designing for Situation Awareness: An Approach to User-Centered Design, Third Edition offers a systematic and successful methodology for supporting the situation awareness (SA) of individuals and teams who work in complex and demanding environments. Newly updated to reflect the latest research on SA, this new edition provides needed background on common SA challenges, the cognitive processes people use to form and maintain SA, and the agile design processes that the SA-Oriented Design processes can compliment. The chapters feature detailed examples of SA-Oriented Design focused on SA in driving, SA in healthcare, SA in command and control, SA in unmanned and remotely operated vehicles, and SA with augmented reality. It also includes 60 detailed design principles for engineers and designers who want to improve the SA provided by their systems based on leading research in the field, as well as 12 principles and proven approaches for developing effective SA training. Design principles focus on supporting people’s SA processes and dealing with common SA challenges, supporting an understanding of information certainty, dealing with complexity and alarms, and the effects of automation and AI on SA, as well as supporting the unique SA needs of teams. This book will appeal to any engineer, human factors practitioner, system designer, or other professional interested in situation awareness. It will be highly pertinent to aviation engineers, military engineers, intelligence professionals, emergency management personnel, medical practitioners, air traffic controllers, automobile engineers, financial and business management workers, and power and process control room staff.

Emotional Design written by Don Norman and has been published by Basic Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-03-20 with Design categories.

Why attractive things work better and other crucial insights into human-centered design Emotions are inseparable from how we humans think, choose, and act. In Emotional Design, cognitive scientist Don Norman shows how the principles of human psychology apply to the invention and design of new technologies and products. In The Design of Everyday Things, Norman made the definitive case for human-centered design, showing that good design demanded that the user's must take precedence over a designer's aesthetic if anything, from light switches to airplanes, was going to work as the user needed. In this book, he takes his thinking several steps farther, showing that successful design must incorporate not just what users need, but must address our minds by attending to our visceral reactions, to our behavioral choices, and to the stories we want the things in our lives to tell others about ourselves. Good human-centered design isn't just about making effective tools that are straightforward to use; it's about making affective tools that mesh well with our emotions and help us express our identities and support our social lives. From roller coasters to robots, sports cars to smart phones, attractive things work better. Whether designer or consumer, user or inventor, this book is the definitive guide to making Norman's insights work for you.
