Diversos estudios han enfatizado la dinámica económica de la creciente desigualdad y las consecuencias políticas de la concentración de riqueza, así como las estrategias de las élites económicas para desarrollar discursos que dan cuenta de su posición sin recurrir a condicionamientos estructurales, o la creación de una identidad de clase a través del consumo "invisible". La preocupación por estas temáticas ha espoleado también el interés de disciplinas tales como la historia y la arqueología, en busca de pensar tanto los modos en que se han configurado sociedades fuertemente desiguales en el pasado como las eventuales proyecciones de estas hacia el mundo contemporáneo. Los capítulos presentados en este libro tienen por objetivo reconsiderar esta serie de problemas en el mundo antiguo, a través de la exploración de las relaciones entre el poder económico, por un lado, y la identidad política y cultural de las élites, por el otro. Estas áreas han sido estudiadas extensamente en el pasado; pero sigue existiendo una brecha analítica entre las dimensiones económicas y no económicas de la identidad de las élites antiguas. Esta brecha puede ser considerada como resultante, en buena medida, de los modelos heredados proporcionados por las tradiciones académicas marxistas y weberianas, ya que el primero otorga prioridad al análisis económico, mientras que el segundo a la representación social. Hemos querido estudiar, entonces, las conexiones entre los cimientos económicos del dominio de las élites y las identidades culturales que marcaron las fronteras sociales en diferentes sociedades antiguas. Under the professional name 'Ashley', Ashley Havinden (1903-1973) was one of the most successful advertising artists and designers working in Britain in the twentieth century. He made his reputation as a graphic designer and the Creative Director of W.S. Crawford, the most progressive advertising agency in the UK since the 1920s. Exploring Materiality and Connectivity in Anthropology and Beyond provides a new look at the old anthropological concern with materiality and connectivity. It understands materiality not as defined property of some-thing, nor does it take connectivity as merely a relation between discrete entities. Somewhat akin to Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle, it sees materiality and connectivity as two interrelated modes in which an entity is, or more precisely – is becoming, in the world. The question, thus, is how these two modes of becoming relate and fold into each other. Throughout the four-year research process that led to this book, the authors approached this question not just from a theoretical perspective; taking the suggestion of 'thinking through things' literally and methodologically seriously, the first two workshops were dedicated to practical, hands-on exercises working with things. From these workshops a series of installations emerged, straddling the boundaries of art and academia. These installations served as artistic-academic interventions during the final symposium and are featured alongside the other academic contributions to this volume. Throughout this process, two main themes emerged and structure Part II, Movement and Growth, and Part III, Dissolution and Traces, of the present volume, respectively. Part I, Conceptual Grounds, consists of two chapters offering conceptual takes on things and ties – one from anthropology and one from archaeology. As interrelated modes of becoming, materiality and connectivity make it necessary to coalesce things and ties into thing~ties – an insight toward which the chapters and interventions came from different sides, and one in which the initial proposition of the editors still shines through. Throughout the pages of this volume, we invite the reader to travel beyond imaginaries of a universe of separate planets united by connections, and to venture with us instead into the thicket of thing~ties in which we live.
