Escrito está: como la otra, la historia de la literatura abunda en enigmas, pero conviene añadir que también estos suelen amonedarse en forma de tópicos. Así, en torno a la propia noción de «literatura hispanoamericana» y sus derivados, se han acumulado numerosas retóricas vacías, frente a las cuales el presente libro propone, de entrada, la consideración de diversas ocasiones en las que la existencia de la «literatura hispanoamericana» ha sido negada explícita y categóricamente por algunos de sus nombres propios más representativos (desde Martí hasta Borges, pasando por Mitre). Conjeturando que de las «inexistencias» surgirían recursos para atenuar en la medida de lo posible las ideaciones mortíferas o el cada vez más anonadante comercio cultural, estas páginas estudian –a partir de perspectivas que lo mismo podrían apodarse «afroborgianas» que «transculturales»– algunos aspectos susceptibles de mostrar tales beneficios de la excepción: el revoloteo de una mariposa a través de milenios; la búsqueda de problemáticas identidades mediante la acuñación de emblemas para una contradictoria heterogeneidad nacional; los embrujos narrativos de la santería cubana; las utilidades del «disparate claro» (desde Goya a Cortázar, Buñuel o Virgilio Piñera) como inmisericorde resorte para suscitar visiones reveladoras de las falsedades convencionales; las tensiones entre letristas de tango y «modernistas» canonizados (de Darío a Gardel). Y, por último, los laberintos que plantea la negación del concepto mismo de «literatura», considerada como artefacto extranjero por escritores (¿performers?) del infinito archipiélago caribeño. Despide el conjunto una coda final acerca del rigor cientificista en el arte de la cartografía literaria.

Latin American women have long written essays on topics ranging from gender identity and the female experience to social injustice, political oppression, lack of educational opportunities, and the need for female solidarity in a patriarchal environment. But this rich vein of writing has often been ignored and is rarely studied. This volume of twenty-one original studies by noted experts in Latin American literature seeks to recover and celebrate the accomplishments of Latin American women essayists. Taking a variety of critical approaches, the authors look at the way women writers have interpreted the essay genre, molded it to their expression, and created an intellectual tradition of their own. Some of the writers they treat are Flora Tristan, Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, Clorinda Matto de Turner, Victoria Ocampo, Alfonsina Storni, Rosario Ferré, Christina Peri Rossi, and Elena Poniatowska. This book is the first of a two-volume project that reexamines the Latin American essay from a feminist perspective.
