This study examines the level and structure of CEO compensation of 2,448 CEO's from 1,622 firms spanning a range extending from 1997 through 2002. Based on agency and expectancy theories, this study tests the hypotheses that corporate diversification is associated with CEO compensation. The results found that the higher degree of international diversification, higher accounting earning performance, higher investment opportunities, and larger firm size, resulted in CEO's receiving higher levels of compensation. In contrast, the higher the degree of industrial diversification, the fewer levels of total compensation, long-term compensation, and stock options corporate CEO's received. In addition, this study finds that both international and industrial diversification is associated with a greater use of current compensation, as well as a greater reliance on accounting-based, rather than stock return earning (market-based measures) of firm performance.

We examine the distinct effects of generalist-specialist versus insider-outsider attributes on Chief Executive Officer (CEO) compensation patterns. Our cross-sectional results show that each attribute has a significant impact on both the level and structure of CEO compensation. CEOs with a high generalist-outsider combination receive the highest total compensation, followed by generalist-insiders, specialist-outsiders, and finally specialist-insiders. Our time-series results show that the generalist-specialist effect remains constant through time while the insider-outsider effect diminishes over time. These findings suggest that the generalist premium is the result of a fundamental shift in the need for generalist skills to manage increasingly-complex enterprises. In contrast, the outsider premium is more likely caused by a temporary increase in bargaining power during contract negotiations. Overall, our study disentangles generalist-specialist attributes from insider-outsider attributes and then identifies the specific channels through which each attribute affects executive compensation.

Two interpretations are possible. Ontario hospital boards may be trading-off the difficulties in implementing a formal pay-for-performance incentive plan with a more subjective and comprehensive evaluation process. This supports the claim that monitoring and bonus plans can both be used as an executive motivational device. Another interpretation, a criticism expressed in current business literature, is that agency problems are unaddressed in current CEO contracting arrangements, and the use of peer comparison and competitive benchmarking simply ratchets up year-to-year CEO compensation. Corporate governance entails monitoring, evaluating and rewarding the performance of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the corporation. An economic approach to understanding CEO compensation predicts that financial incentives will be written into the CEO's compensation contract to align the goals of the owners of the firm with those of the top executive of the firm. At the same time, economic theory predicts that not-for-profit organizations, which have multiple stakeholders, complex multidimensional missions and hard to observe and measure outputs, may be unable to write similar incentive contracts for the CEO and hence suffer from enhanced agency problems. This thesis is an exploratory investigation into the CEO compensation policies employed by the Board of Directors of Ontario public not-for-profit hospitals. A survey of CEOs and boards finds that the majority of Ontario hospitals do base CEO compensation in part on performance, this performance evaluation being a comprehensive review of CEO specific performance goals and objectives, including specific hospital targets. These surveys also highlighted that Ontario hospital boards have had difficulties in establishing formal pay-for-performance systems due in large part to hospital outcomes being perceived as largely beyond the control of the CEO. Guided by equity theory, an empirical model investigates how pay comparisons with peer hospital CEOs influence subsequent CEO compensation adjustments, and finds that changes in CEO compensation are significantly related to the relative inequity position of a CEO compared to its peers.

Executive compensation has garnered much attention in the last decade from both academicians and practitioners. We examine the relationship between increase in CEO compensation, industry specific performance measures, and stock return for the years 1993-1999 in the Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) industry. We find evidence that compensation evaluation is related to stock returns, and to changes in Real Estate Investment and Funds from Operation for the years 1997, 1998, and 1999. Furthermore, we document a negative relation between CEO raise and age. We find no link between compensation and Earnings per Share, whether the REIT is self-managed, or type of property in which the REIT specializes.
