In ailand people usually refer to the Shan as “Tai Yai” (“Big Tai”). Most Shan migrant workers are from Shan State in Burma, which borders the western ai provinces of Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai and Tak. Not all migrant workers from Shan State are Shan, but they represent the great majority (Amporn, 2008). e Shan are the largest population of migrant workers in Chiang Mai. Due to unbalanced development and uneven power relations in the region, migration has taken place for more than two decades. Starting from 1992, ailand has been documenting border crossings from neighboring countries - Burma, Cambodia and Laos – which are the main sources of transnational migrant workers, with Burma accounting for the biggest migrant population in the Kingdom.

This research aimed at finding the comparing of promoting factors for co-existence between Thais and migrant worker in Pathum Thani Province Thailand. Data was collected from a group of Thais and migrant worker who living in Pathum Thani Province 400 people in each group. The research instrument was a rating-scale questionnaire. For data analysis, descriptive statistics included frequency, mean, percentage and standard deviation were applied for hypothesis testing, t-test statistic and one-way ANOVA also applied for this research. The findings revealed that most Thais monthly income not exceeding 15,000 bath (455 US$) and living in Pathum Thani more than twenty years. Migrant workers came from Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos mostly was Myanmar. Most of migrant worker monthly income not exceeding 9,000 bath (273 US$) and most of them living in Pathum Thani not over 4 years. Most of both groups are female. There were ten promoting factors for coexistence between Thai and Migrant worker which all of them was at the high level. The first three factors which had highest scores from Thais were:1) Religious factor,2) Behavioral and Adaptive factors,3) Social and Cultural dependence factors, and from Migrant worker were:1) language and communication factors 2) law and security factors 3) religion factors. From the hypothesis testing, it was found that there were statistically significance at 0.05 level between samples with respect to nationality, age, income, occupation and duration of residing in Pathum Thani on the opinions regarding promoting factors for co-existence between Thais and Migrant worker.

This dissertation is a comparative ethnography of labor migration governance in Thailand. Drawing from 17 months of multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork between 2015 and 2019, a period of intensified guestwork formalization, the study explores a puzzle unexamined in migration governance literature typically focused on the global North: why does one state advance divergent regimes to regulate and reproduce the same type of migrant labor? While migration regime models based on national immigration policy frameworks would point to regulatory differences by skill category, I examine the contrasting ways a state governs low-wage, "low-skill" migrant workers between sites. I use a multiscalar framework to compare subnational regimes of labor migration along three key dimensions: developmental (political economic influences on policy), regulatory (governance relations and practices), and reproductive (structures of social reproduction). Findings are based on participant observation in migrant rights organizations and in-depth interviews with migrant workers from Myanmar, Thai state officers, employers, and documentation brokers in Samut Sakhon, a site hosting guestworkers with labor rights and benefits in the seafood supply chain, and in the Tak border zone, where garment and agriculture workers are contained at the country's periphery with limited rights. I argue that the state reacts to multiple external pressures on how it governs guestwork with limited control capacity and in relation to local circumstances, resulting in varied policies and subnational governance practices that differentially regulate and shape the social reproduction of labor in different locations. I show that the state's responses to concurrent pressures reinforce distinct regimes exhibiting varying emphases on temporal and spatial logics of control. Following a global trend toward temporary migrant labor systems, the Thailand case illuminates labor migration governance in migrant receiving contexts of the global South. The dissertation theorizes such governance by identifying the developmental determinants of guestwork policies, the sources and outcomes of informal brokerage as a regulatory institution in migration infrastructures, and the divergent structures of social reproduction that supply precarious migrant labor for production. More broadly, the project makes contributions to the understanding of state power and the "many hands" of the state in a changing and varied development context

What happens when local unions begin to advocate for the rights of temporary migrant workers, asks Michele Ford in her sweeping study of seven Asian countries? Until recently unions in Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand were uniformly hostile towards foreign workers, but Ford deftly shows how times and attitudes have begun to change. Now, she argues, NGOs and the Global Union Federations are encouraging local unions to represent and advocate for these peripheral workers, and in some cases succeeding. From Migrant to Worker builds our understanding of the role the international labor movement and local unions have had in developing a movement for migrant workers' labor rights. Ford examines the relationship between different kinds of labor movement actors and the constraints imposed on those actors by resource flows, contingency, and local context. Her conclusions show that in countries—Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Thailand—where resource flows and local factors give the Global Union Federations more influence local unions have become much more engaged with migrant workers. But in countries—Japan and Taiwan, for example—where they have little effect there has been little progress. While much has changed, Ford forces us to see that labor migration in Asia is still fraught with complications and hardships, and that local unions are not always able or willing to act.
