This book presents an amalgam of early intervention ideas from the fields of education, occupational therapy, and physical therapy for children with developmental delays. An introductory chapter describes the approach's three theoretical bases: neurodevelopmental treatment (NDT), sensory integration, and Piagetian theory. Chapter 1 considers assessment, including determination of eligibility, screening, diagnosis, evaluation for program planning, and program evaluation. NDT program components are reviewed in Chapter 2, including positioning, handling, and facilitating movement. Chapter 3 considers sensory integration program components including tactile, vestibular, and proprioceptive activities. Piagetian program components such as play and cognitive content are described in the fourth chapter, covering object permanence, means-ends and cause-effect, gestural and vocal imitation, and spatial relationships. Chapter 5 presents speech-language program components including feeding, speech production, auditory responsiveness, communication, and augmentative communication. Chapter 6 offers guidelines for integrating program components, with sections on the team model, team members, services delivered by the transdisciplinary team, in-service programs, incorporating therapy in the classroom, and development of individualized programs. Four appendixes list assessment and instructional resources. A glossary and a bibliography of 120 items are also included. (DB)

Easy to use and understand, Teams in Educa-tion: Creating An Integrated Approach is a tool for education professionals who need or want to develop cross-functional or departmental teams in education. This new handbook was specifically designed to provide education professionals with a practical, pragmatic way to create and manage quality teams. Although there are many team handbooks available today, most are complex and difficult to follow for the average individual. In addition, these books are expensive and many schools or school districts cannot afford to purchase a copy for everyone. Unlike these existing handbooks, Teams in Education is clearly written in straightforward language that simply describes how to create and manage teams. The reader quickly understands the processes to follow to ensure total participation in team activities and is given the tools to measure and document team progress. As one education professional explained, the reader develops the expertise and understanding necessary to eliminate and manage conflict. This unique handbook also contains a simple process to encourage everyone to participate in the quality initiative. The 5+5 program outlined in this book is used to demonstrate to staff that no improvement is too small. This technique makes it easier for staff to show the added value of their quality activities to administrators and school board members. Special feature - this 5+5 program is the only program designed to collect the data education professionals need to show that they are making improvements in student and administrative outcomes.

The profession owes them great appreciation for returning the foundational competency of programming to our collective attention and providing a contemporary model to implement programs of quality.”—From the foreword by Susan R. KomivesProgram development is central to the work of student affairs professionals, yet the field has not prioritized the development of competency in this area. This book provides an overview of recent advances in Integrated Community-Managed Development (ICMD) as an innovative strategy for the community-based development of local institutions in order to achieve lasting poverty reduction and empowerment. The original approach presented here to improving the lives and livelihoods of the poor takes a critical stance on the failing concept of conventional community development, as it is based on the shifting paradigm of 'bottom-up' cooperation and development, where recent regional autonomy policies are enabling national services to successfully integrate with local institutions at the community level. Based on recent experiences in South-East Asia, where the implementation of an alternative approach to integrating financial, medical, educational, communication and socio-cultural services has led to increased community participation and impressive poverty reduction, the book highlights the theoretical, methodological and practical aspects of this innovative strategy. The potential offered by applying the newly developed 'ICMD formula' worldwide as a function of themes, principles and services is reflected in the book’s diverse range of contributions, written by respected researchers and practitioners in the fields of development economics and financial management.
