The chapters in this current book reflect current and/or necessary changes in music therapy training that come about because of history, society, economy, generational shifts and the workplace. Although the subject matter is these chapters may appear disparate, it is not. The subject matter invites comparison in the following ways: 1) questions the nature of music therapy itself; 2) examines challenges to education and training; 3) suggests critical thinking (vs repetition or repackaging of information) for students, educators, clinicians, researchers and supervisors in the field of music therapy; 4) respects the past but looks to the future; 5) offers perspective from others in the field through such vehicles as surveys, interviews and/or reviews of literature. Part I is titled ‘New Frameworks and Content for Music Therapy Education and Training’ Part II of the book, ‘Online Formats for Music Therapy Education and Training’ offers two chapters which have become increasingly urgent information due to the emergence of the COVID-19 epidemic throughout the world (March 2020), now in its third year, coupled with the explosion of technological resources and demand for online and hybrid learning. Part III of the book, ‘Inclusivity in Music Therapy Education and Training,’ presents two vital chapters to remind educators of pressing issues. Part IV of the book, ‘Professional Opportunities in Music Therapy Education, Training and Development,’ present four uniquely different chapters, yet each focuses on opportunities that any student or educator should consider. Part V, ‘Ongoing issues and Possibilities in Music Therapy Education and Training,’ considers two more developing topics in the field. Readers will enjoy and profit from this book, reflecting on how to continue to move on in music therapy education and training.

In order to practice art therapy, one must have faith in the healing qualities of art processes and products. Introduction to Art Therapy: Faith in the Product begins and ends with references to love and faith, including characteristic elements of the writing process and clinical art therapy endeavors. This third edition represents a thorough revision of ideas expressed in the previous two editions, presenting the major themes and issues of the profession in light of the experiences of intervening years. Art therapy is effective with individuals, families, and groups and it works well with the intellectually gifted and the learning impaired. It can also be used with the chronically mentally ill, the terminally ill, the vision impaired, and the deaf. Art therapy is particularly effective with post-traumatic stress disorder--from the aftereffects of war, including physical, sexual, or emotional abuse. Enhancements in this text include: an overview of the spectrum of theoretical orientations within art therapy; a brief history of practice in the United States; fundamental principles of art therapy; curative aspects of art therapy; and metaverbal therapy. The author underscores the nature of the work, describes truths and fictions, explores pathos or pathology, and the therapeutic self. The text examines the social responsibility of art therapists and their colleagues; to record events, give form to culture, nurture imagination, and promote individual and social transformation. In addition, the author presents exceptional case examples including client-prepared artwork that highlights the text. This book will be an inspiration to serious artists that want to be involved in art therapy, and to the veteran art therapists to renew their vocations by living the process of art therapy. This comprehensive and insightful book will be valuable to art therapists, medical and mental health professionals, occupational therapists, and other rehabilitation professionals that aspire to become more effective in reaching others.

Music therapy as a field has strived to embrace multiculturalism within education and practice. Over hundreds of thousands come to the United States in pursuit of higher education every year. For decades, these international scholars face many academic and non-academic challenges during their time away from home. Yet, many of these challenges remain relevant today. The purpose of this duoethnographic study was to explore the experiences of two international students who pursued music therapy education and training in the United States of America. The study describes the challenges faced and resources used, as well as provide perception and insights during their music therapy education and training. The participants were two Malaysian students who had received their music therapy education approximately 10 years apart. Both participants had two sessions of conversations, each lasting around one hour and a half. Data were derived from these conversations and categorized into themes and sub-themes, along with a brief transcription of the conversation accordingly. Themes and sub-themes that emerged are (1) Non-academic and academic challenges, (2) Tapping into available resources, (3) Conductive environment for growth, (4) Personal growth, (5) Finding a new ground between Eastern and Western values, (6) Gratitude, and (6) Hindsight. The study allowed participants an opportunity to verbally process their experiences and provide perspectives. While there is much effort put forward by music therapy organizations in developing cultural sensitivity within education and training, this study hopes to encourage further progression in cultural diversity, add insights into the direction of the cultural sensitivity within the field of music therapy, and contribute to the development of a diverse and resilient field.
