Developing Thinking Players Baseball/Softball edition What is the best play for the fielding with a runner on three and one down? Does this change if the fielding team is up by five runs in the bottom of the last innings as opposed to being ahead by one in the third? With a left-handed batter should the fielding team shift, if so how far? Where should the batting team be hitting? Is a bunt a good idea? What factors would alter this decision? Baseball and softball both require a deep understanding of the game and how contextual factors impact on tactics to play well. When players have developed this deeper understanding it brings an extra dimension to their play. We all know of players who have a real feel for the game, who understand it in ways that lead to them making good decisions and making the great plays at crucial times. But how do they develop this understanding? Are they born with a special level of interest that leads to them becoming "students of the game" or is this understanding developed through good coaching and game experience? The Developing Thinking Players (DTP) approach is based on the strong belief that appropriate coaching/teaching will lead to every player becoming a smarter player. It uses game based scenarios, played out in real game situations, to help players to develop their understanding of the game and to learn to make good decisions. DTP is based on the following six principles If players are to become good decision makers they need to practice making decisions in realistic contexts. For players to learn at a deeper level they must be practically involved in the coaching/learning process. The motivation to learn physical skills is enhanced when players understand why they are important within the game context. Competition is a strong motivator for players and it is important in the training phase to help replicate the competitive pressure faced in games. The role of the coach is of paramount importance. A positive team culture is important. The book presents twenty-five different scenarios. Each scenario has the innings, score, batters out and the runners on base detailed. For each scenario three outcomes, ranked from a three pointer for the best through to one point for the less favoured, are supplied for both the batting and fielding team. Once the scenario is shown to the players they are asked to work out the tactics that will give them the best opportunity to score their team the maximum points while restricting the oppositions scoring. Then the scenario is played out as in a real game and points awarded. While there are a number of ways of running the programme the most common is to allow the players' time to discuss what happened and whether they need to modify their tactics before repeating the scenario. The DTP programme is designed with a great deal of flexibility. This allows it to be implemented successfully by teaches and coaches of all levels of experience and knowledge. Coaches can develop their own scenarios and points tables and add any other relevant contextual factors that they feel may impact on the decision-making. DTP is a player centred approach designed to allow the players to get involved with their learning. It supplies an opportunity for coaches and teachers to stimulate interest and generate authentic learning for their players. As such it is a valuable additional resource for all coaches and teachers of physical education Note: All scenarios have a QR code which allows them to be uploaded quickly onto a smart phone or iPad. This allows for easy access during practice. Each scenario has an attached coaching/teaching page that explains the scenario in more detail. It also has space for notes to be taken for future discussion on the tactical decisions made, and to list skills that have been identified during the scenario as needing to be improved.

I started out coaching over twenty-five years ago and its safe to say a whole lot has changed since then. Even when I was a player, it was the physical side of the game that was emphasized, along with being brave and committed, words like cognition were meant for psychology class and not the soccer field. Maybe once in a while the coach would shout, "what are you thinking", undoubtedly not to teach us anything but more as a reprimand then anything else. The idea of developing the soccer the brain wasn't something I was ever exposed to as player and young coach. However, there were pioneers back then; Wiel Coerver was spreading the message of the importance of technical training, but the link between technical training, physical training and the brain was never fully developed or discussed. This motivated me to make it my mission re-think player development on every level, from youth to adult. I ended up creating a coaching methodology that is specifically designed to develop the soccer brain. The theory and applications behind my work are presented in detail in my five book series "Cognitive Soccer Instructors Diploma Course Manuals" #1-5, these are also sold on amazon.com. This book focuses primarily on ways you can train the soccer brain by playing small-sided games using different variations, rules and conditions. In order to be successful in SSG's (small-sided games) the players will need to problem solve and figure out solutions to each exercise, the exercises will ultimately become the teacher. The coach can certainly step in to ask questions (to guide the players), make corrections or adjust a rule or condition. However, it is important the coach does not try and over-coach the players, allows enough time for players to become comfortable with the exercise before making changes and keeps a good overall flow to the practice. SSG's are so effective because players get to experience a variety of different meaningful situations which they have to strategize and problem solve collectively as a unit and as individuals to solve. This in turn will ultimately develop the soccer brain! Don't get me wrong, expert feedback from a talented coach during training is necessary, but it is even more critical that the coach understands how to set-up exercises that will allow players to learn on their own as well. If the exercise is breaking down, the coach should have the tools to make an adjustment, so the correct level of challenge is present. If the players are not challenged enough, the coach should be able to make an adjustment that will increase the games difficulty. I can go into detail about the importance of novelty in training, sweet spot of learning, the value of unique soccer experiences, the benefit of healthy stress in training, the use of priming, the power of questions and much more, but the purpose of this book is to give coaches the tools to make any SSG into a "Brain Development Game". This is a book about learning. Learning can often be forgotten or fringe in the pursuit of other fruits. When these fruits are practice books, formal & standardised education and easy to digest, saccharine infused niceties there is a risk that we overlook one of the fundamental human needs; to develop, change, grow and learn to master crafts. The mastery of crafts such as coaching takes time, earnest commitment and many challenging, chastening experiences that leave us feeling a little less than skilful. However we overcome these challenges, they are likely to be enablers that support our learning and growth towards becoming a better coach than we were yesterday. This book is intended to support that exploration; generate and guide your thinking whilst ensuring the gestation of those seeds of thought. We will encourage and enable a deeper understanding of the people or players in our care and provide some illumination on how to guide our decisions in designing environments that are responsive to both you and your players. There will be no coaching prescriptions, simply because the general nature of a constraints-led approach is at odds with prescription focussed approaches to coaching. A constraints-led approach encourages us to take account of, better understand and integrate what we understand about the player (person), the game of football (task) and the specific conditions on any given day (environment) into every interaction, coaching session, game-day, tournament and any other activity we might engage in within player development. There will, however, be some probing into alternative ways for coaches to eschew the traditional practice book or formal curriculum and scaffold player and coach development towards a unique, bespoke, responsive eco-system that keeps rhythm with the beating heart of our own football club. Taken together, this can support the experiences we are exposed to and build to be unique, individual and reflective of what collectively we have agreed and understand to be important in our world. The characteristics of our context should be coupled to our commitments. The backdrop to the way of thinking expressed in this book has been supported by a generation spent within coaching and development; fortune has favoured the opportunity for me to support in a sustained fashion the development of players who have been top scorers at The World Cup, multiple Premier League winners and coaches who coach and manage across some of Europe's top leagues. However, these perceived successes must be allied to the players within those same development programmes whose opportunity has been curtailed by serious injury and coaches who have fallen foul of some of the vagaries that the industry can perpetuate. As such, no development system is universally successful or unsuccessful and we should be careful, thoughtful and willing to as readily 'research' the graveyard as we do the top table. That mirror may be unpleasant to stare into at times, yet it is an important reflection of our own fallibilities and an important reminder to ensure that whatever outcomes our coaching and development programmes facilitate; supporting them to be as humanly supportive yet challenging as is consciously achievable is a worthy and important goal. The aspiration for this book is that it provides a map of some of the landscape that coaches may wish to explore in developing their own constraints-led approach to development, both for the players in their care and for themselves as a coach. Illuminating this fertile land sufficiently to support discoveries that are purposeful, personal and personable.
