"This book investigates the history of women's reproductive health in Ghana, arguing that between the 1920s and 1980s, it was largely driven by discourses of development and population control, rather than a concern for women's health or rights. Between the 1920s and 1980s, the choices that Ghanaian women made regarding their reproductive health were defined by development policy and practice. Spanning the colonial and immediate postcolonial periods, this book demonstrates that whilst the substance of development discourse shifted over time, principles of development continued to be used to impact and legitimise reproductive health policy and practices well after independence. The book explores Ghana's pluralist health system, the introduction of maternal and child welfare, the dominance of the Red Cross in Ghana's maternal and child health landscape, nationalist pronatalism and global population activism. In order to understand how global iterations of development and health policy impacted on ordinary lives in Ghana, the author uses evidence from multiple 'levels', including private papers, national archives, and records of international and transnational organisations. Providing balanced archival perspectives, the book includes extensive oral history interviews carried out with both rural Ghanaian women and traditional birth attendants, as well as with midwives, doctors and family planning fieldworkers. This book will have an important impact on a number of historical fields including Ghanaian history, global health history, global histories of population and family planning and histories of development. It will be of interest to researchers and students in the history of public health, development, Africa, Ghana and gender"--

The second most populous country in the West African subregion, Ghana is plagued by a population growth rate that far exceeds its economic growth rate. Hence, comprehensive action in family planning is needed to improve the country's social and economic well-being. Although studies on family planning and reproductive health are not lacking, the information is scattered. This annotated bibliography compiles the existing works on family planning and reproductive health in Ghana into a single resource guide. Every effort has been made to include all scholarly works, books, chapters in books, conference papers, discussion papers, periodical literature, public documents, thesis and dissertations, and technical reports, thereby providing scholars and practitioners with quick access to a wide range of research materials. The book is arranged into six topical chapters. Chapter one covers population dynamics, with a focus on general population characteristics and trends in population growth through fertility, mortality, and migration. Chapter two lists works on general reproductive behavior and contraception, including attitudes toward fertility, fertility preference, men's role in contraception and contraceptive devices. Chapter three includes works dealing with family planning program development and evaluation. Chapter four turns to factors other than contraception affecting fertility, such as breast-feeding, sexual practice, maternal age, birth intervals, nuptiality, sex roles, and sex preference. Chapter five is devoted to studies concerning primary health services, such as health delivery systems, child and maternal health, nutrition, traditional birth attendants, disease, and abortion. The final chapter covers general population policy and legislation.

Examining the domestic politics of imperial expansion these essays question the role of the Industrial Revolution and British imperial leadership beyond the issue of hierarchy and The Great Divergence. This volume brings together leading global economic historians to honour Patrick O'Brien's contribution to the establishment of global economic history as a coherent and respected field in the academy. Inspired by O'Brien's seminal work on the British Industrial Revolution as a global phenomenon, these essays expand the role of the Industrial Revolution and British imperial leadership beyond the issue of hierarchy and The Great Divergence. The change from the protective Atlantic empire, 1650-1850, to the free trade empire of the last half of the long nineteenth century is elaborated as are the conscious efforts of the free trade empire to develop markets and market economies in Africa. British domestic politics associated with the change and the continuation to the recent politics of Brexit are fascinatingly narrated and documented, including the economic rationale for imperial expansion, in the first instance. The narrative continues to the crises of globalization caused by the world wars and the Great Depression, which forced the free trade British Empire to change course. Further, the effects of the crises and the imperial reaction on the East African colonies and on New Zealand and Australia are examined. Given current concerns about the environmental impact of economic activities, it is noteworthy that this volume includes the environmental impact of globalization in India caused by the free trade policy of the British free trade empire.

At a UN General Assembly Special Session in 1999, governments recognised unsafe abortion as a major public health concern, and pledged their commitment to reduce the need for abortion through expanded and improved family planning services, as well as ensure abortion services should be safe and accessible. This technical and policy guidance provides a comprehensive overview of the many actions that can be taken in health systems to ensure that women have access to good quality abortion services as allowed by law.
