The Compressed Baryonic Matter experiment (CBM) will investigate heavy ion collisions at beam energies between 10 and 40 AGeV in order to explore the nuclear matter phase diagram in the high baryon density region. For a first time, open charm mesons (D0 and D±) will be used as probe for the nuclear fireball. Reconstructing them requires a very thin (few 0.1 % X0 per layer) micro vertex detector (MVD) with pixel sensors featuring excellent spatial resolution (few μm) and substantial radiation hardness. This work studies whether (and how) an MVD based on the novel Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) can the reach the performance needed. For this purpose, the precise requirements on the MVD in terms of material budget, cooling, time resolution and radiation hardness were estimated. Extensive R&D studies on MAPS allowed establishing their performances in particular in the field of radiation tolerance and to improve this tolerance by one order of magnitude. The information obtained was used as input for a GEANT simulation which demonstrated the feasibility of open charm physics with the proposed detector concept.

The CBM experiment (Compressed Baryonic Matter), one of the main experiments of the future FAIR accelerator facility (Darmstadt, Germany), aims in studying the phase diagram of nuclear matter in the region of high baryonic densities and moderate temperatures. Among the core physics goals is the study of the production and propagation of open charm particles, like D-mesons (particles containing one charm quark and one light quark) in heavy ion collisions. The measurements of these charmed mesons require the use of an excellent precision vertex detector. The present thesis is a contribution to the design and development of this detection device called MVD (Micro Vertex Detector). It is focused on three different parts. The first one concerns the experimental characterisation of the response of MAPS (Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors) sensors, composing the MVD detector stations, to the passage of charged particles. The second deals with the development of a realistic detector response model for the MVD detector. The last part focuses on a detailed feasibility study of open charm particle measurements in heavy ion collisions. The results demonstrate the feasibility of open charm particle measurements and allow assessing the expected performances and the limitations of the experiment.

Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) are good candidates to be used in High Energy Physics (HEP) experiments for charged particle detection. In the HEP applications, MAPS chips are placed very close to the interaction point and are directly exposed to harsh environmental radiation. This thesis focuses on the study and improvement of the MAPS radiation hardness. The main radiation effects and the research progress of MAPS are studied firstly. During the study, the SRAM IP cores built in MAPS are found limiting the radiation hardness of the whole MAPS chips. Consequently, in order to improve the radiation hardness of MAPS, three radiation hard memories are designed and evaluated for the HEP experiments. In order to replace the SRAM IP cores, a radiation hard SRAM is developed on a very limited area. For smaller feature size processes, in which the single event upset (SEU) effects get significant, a radiation hard SRAM with enhanced SEU tolerance is implemented by an error detection and correction algorithm and a bit-interleaving storage. In order to obtain higher radiation tolerance and higher circuitry density, a dual-port memory with an original 2-transistor cell is developed and evaluated for future MAPS chips. Finally, the radiation hardness of the MAPS chips using new available processes is studied, and the future works are prospected.

Development Of Pixel Detectors With Integrated Microcircuits For The Vertex Detector In The Star Experiment At The Rhic Collider written by Michal Szelezniak and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with categories.

This work is part of the Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor (MAPS) R&D program that is directed towards construction of a new, 135 million pixel vertex detector for the STAR experiment at the RHIC collider. The new detector is planned to be installed in 2011 to extend the current physics capabilities of the system by providing a pointing resolution of 30 µm. The STAR collaboration is actively pursuing detector development in MAPS technology that offers thin monolithic detectors fabricated in standard CMOS processes. The work presented addresses the development of MAPS from basic architectures to simple integrated on-chip signal processing. A common element for most of the presented readout schemes is a compact low-noise, low power consumption, compact in-pixel amplifier. A review of possible solutions for this element together with experimental results is presented. MAPS operating in current mode have been investigated in this thesis as an alternative to the classical voltage mode. Integration of MAPS sensors in a complete detector system has been investigated with a prototype readout system coupled to a detector telescope composed from three MAPS prototypes. The optimization of the readout of a multi-million pixel detector has been addressed with a study of an "on-the-fly" cluster finding algorithm reducing the data rates. The operation of RHIC with increased luminosity will require more advanced pixel architectures than the simple design implemented in the first prototypes. The solutions presented indicate a development path for the final sensor with in-pixel signal amplification and on-chip data digitization.
