Introduces the concept of food-based dietary guidelines as a powerful new tool for addressing the changing nutrition needs of Western Pacific countries. Food-based dietary guidelines, which emphasize specific foods dishes and local cuisines rather than nutrients or food groups, are considered an especially promising tool for the development of culturally sensitive dietary advice easily understood by consumers. The remaining sections alert readers to the possible negative effects of dietary recommendations on agriculture and the environment and set out guidelines for developing and implementing culturally sensitive dietary advice.

Diet is one of the single most important contributors to health, but also to disease. Food-Based Dietary Guidelines (FBDGs) provide information on healthy eating and lifestyle aimed at preventing all forms of malnutrition, including non­communicable diet-related diseases and keeping people well-nourished and healthy. The FBDGs is a fruit of joint efforts and collaboration made by mainly four institutions: the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL), the Ministry of Education (MoE), and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The development, promotion and dissemination of FBDGs for Afghans is an important part of the strategy of the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) for improving the nutritional status of the Afghan population. Its realization is in accordance with the Ministry's mission of improving the health and nutritional status of the Afghan people. The aim is to achieve this in an equitable and sustainable manner, through the provision of quality health services, advocacy for the development of healthy environments and living conditions, and the promotion of healthy eating and lifestyles.

Abstract: The technical development of the food guidance system presented in the nutrition course offered by the American Red Cross is described in this report. The purpose of the course is to enable the consumer to make wise personal food decisions based on current concepts of nutrition for health promotion. The food guidance system organizes information about food and nutrition so that it can be applied to making food selections that promote health. The framework for this system is groups of foods categorized by the nutrients they contain. The first step in the development of the system was the establishment of goals and objectives which specified the desirable levels of nutrients and other food components in one's diet. The framework for the system is described: major food groups, serving sizes and number, nutrient adequacy, and food sources of specific nutrients. The food guidance system also includes information on food sources of fat, cholesterol, sodium, and sweeteners. Menus for 10 days are included, as well as suggestions for adapting them to different energy and nutrient needs. Many tables that are supplied to the students are included. (as).

What foods should Americans eat to promote their health, and in what amounts? What is the scientific evidence that supports specific recommendations for dietary intake to reduce the risk of multifactorial chronic disease? These questions are critically important because dietary intake has been recognized to have a role as a key determinant of health. As the primary federal source of consistent, evidence-based information on dietary practices for optimal nutrition, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) have the promise to empower Americans to make informed decisions about what and how much they eat to improve health and reduce the risk of chronic disease. The adoption and widespread translation of the DGA requires that they be universally viewed as valid, evidence-based, and free of bias and conflicts of interest to the extent possible. However, this has not routinely been the case. A first short report meant to inform the 2020 review cycle explored how the advisory committee selection process can be improved to provide more transparency, eliminate bias, and include committee members with a range of viewpoints. This second and final report recommends changes to the DGA process to reduce and manage sources of bias and conflicts of interest, improve timely opportunities for engagement by all interested parties, enhance transparency, and strengthen the science base of the process.

Price and affordability are key barriers to accessing sufficient, safe, nutritious food to meet dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. In this study, the least-cost items available in local markets are identified to estimate the cost of three diet types: energy sufficient, nutrient adequate, and healthy (meeting food-based dietary guidelines). For price and availability the World Bank’s International Comparison Program (ICP) dataset is used, which provides food prices in local currency units (LCU) for 680 foods and non-alcoholic beverages in 170 countries in 2017. In addition, country case studies are developed with national food price datasets in United Republic of Tanzania, Malawi, Ethiopia, Ghana and Myanmar. The findings reveal that healthy diets by any definition are far more expensive than the entire international poverty line of USD 1.90, let alone the upper bound portion of the poverty line that can credibly be reserved for food of USD 1.20. The cost of healthy diets exceeds food expenditures in most countries in the Global South. The findings suggest that nutrition education and behaviour change alone will not substantially improve dietary consumption where nutrient adequate and healthy diets, even in their cheapest form, are unaffordable for the majority of the poor. To make healthy diets cheaper, agricultural policies, research, and development need to shift toward a diversity of nutritious foods.

Every 5 years since 1980, a new edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans has been published. Its goal is to make recommendations about the components of a healthy and nutritionally adequate diet to help promote health and prevent chronic disease for current and future generations. Although many of its recommendations have remained relatively consistent over time, the Dietary Guidelines has evolved as scientific knowledge has grown. These advancements have provided a greater understanding of, and focus on, the importance of healthy eating patterns as a whole, and how foods and beverages act synergistically to affect health. The Dietary Guidelines is designed for professionals to help all individuals ages 2 years and older and their families consume a healthy, nutritionally adequate diet. The information in the Dietary Guidelines is used in developing Federal food, nutrition, and health policies and programs. It also is the basis for Federal nutrition education materials designed for the public and for the nutrition education components of HHS and USDA food programs. It is developed for use by policymakers and nutrition and health professionals. Additional audiences who may use Dietary Guidelines information to develop programs, policies, and communication for the general public include businesses, schools, community groups, media, the food industry, and State and local governments. Previous editions of the Dietary Guidelines focused primarily on individual dietary components such as food groups and nutrients. However, people do not eat food groups and nutrients in isolation but rather in combination, and the totality of the diet forms an overall eating pattern. The components of the eating pattern can have interactive and potentially cumulative effects on health. These patterns can be tailored to an individual's personal preferences, enabling Americans to choose the diet that is right for them. A growing body of research has examined the relationship between overall eating patterns, health, and risk of chronic disease, and findings on these relationships are sufficiently well established to support dietary guidance. As a result, eating patterns and their food and nutrient characteristics are a focus of the recommendations in the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines.
