Bone Metastases brings together the many recent developments that are gradually improving the prospects for patients with secondary involvement of the skeleton in a primary cancer elsewhere. The morbidity from bone metastases is extensive, and the palliative and supportive treatment that sufferers require for many months or even years constitutes a major health problem. A multidisciplinary approach is essential since a variety of specialists are involved: radiation and medical oncologists, general and orthopaedic surgeons, general physicians, radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians, symptom control and terminal care specialists. The book's editors, themselves authorities in the fields of oncology and bone disease respectively, have brought together experts from all these disciplines to provide comprehensive coverage of metastatic bone disease. They cover the biology and pathophysiology, hypercalcaemia, imaging, assessment of response to treatment, types of treatment (systemic, radiotherapy, surgery), and symptomatic and supportive care. Particularly new approaches included are magnetic resonance imaging, the assessment of skeletal response and isotope therapy.

An introductory text on bone metastases written by experts from various disciplines. It covers the basic principles of surgery in bone cancer, classification, medical treatment, radiotherapy, surgical treatment, incidence and pain relief. The steady progress in diagnosis and treatment of bone cancer in the last decade has dramatically changed the prognosis of cancer patients, improving significantly the overall survival rate and quality of life. Multidisciplinary treatments that combine surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, as described in this book, show significantly improved results and an above average survival rate. Some hematologic malignancies that involve bone may be cured with systemic chemotherapy or radiotherapy, but for most patients with bone metastases, pain relief is the goal of therapy.

"Metastatic Bone Disease: Fundamental and Clinical Aspects" is an expanded version of a workshop on bone metastases which was held in Heidelberg, Germany, in April 1993. Bone metastases very often develop from malignant tumors and lead to complications which considerably diminish the quality of life of the patient. Bone pain, pathological fractures, and hypercalcemic syndrome should be recognized and treated ear- ly, so as to prevent any further morbidity and immobilizati- on. Antiosteolytic substances such as biophosphonate can supplement the established palliative and supportive thera- pies. Highly qualified basic researchers and clinicians in pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of metastatic bone disease have contributed to this book, providing a good overview ofpresent knowledge and research. The book will be of interest not only to specialists, but also to any physi- cian interested in oncology.

Bone tumours are very rare, accounting for less than 0.2% of all cancers. As our understanding of these tumours at the molecular level is improving, as well as recent advances in imaging and treatments, there is an obvious need for an update in this field. This comprehensive book is the result of the contribution of different internationally renowned expert teams in the management of bone tumours and particularly spinal neoplasms. The first five chapters deal with spinal tumours, either primary or metastatic, giving the reader a clear clinical review of the disease and its pathophysiology, as well as therapeutic options. The following chapters are dedicated to new insights in the medical treatment of bone tumours, an overview on the mechanism of malignant transformation of benign bone tumours, the modern management of pain in bone metastases, and the modern therapeutics of bone tumours in prostate cancer patients.

Current Concepts Of Diagnosis And Treatment Of Bone And Soft Tissue Tumors written by Hans K. Uhthoff and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1984 with Medical categories.

During the past decade, the prognosis of bone and soft tissue tumors has improved considerably. This progress has not only been due to improved therapeutics and diagnostic methods but also due to a team approach now universally adopted. Comparison of results, possible today, were hampered in the past by lack of a clinically relevant staging system and definitive treatment proto cols. The complexity of the therapeutic management of bone tumors re quires a constant exposure to tumors, highly skilled diagnostic tech niques, and specialized expertise. It is therefore not surprising to learn that small and medium-sized hospitals embarking on the diagnosis and treatment of bone and soft tissue tumors are generally less success ful than better equipped major centers. This fact has already been recognized by most physicians and surgeons who now refer their patients to specialized oncologic centers. Nevertheless, they all have to know the present state of the art. This symposium was therefore mostly addressed to them. This international symposium, organized by the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Ottawa, and cosponsored by the Association des Chirurgiens Orthopedistes du Quebec, was held in Ottawa from May 12-14, 1983. Each of the 40 presentations clearly demonstrates that disregard for proper staging before initiation of treatment and omission of a clearly defined treatment protocol is definitely unacceptable in view of the knowledge we have acquired.
