This publication assumes that the modern context of plurality requires universities and higher education to support studying plural religious traditions in depth, giving due consideration to plural religious and secular perspectives, and providing opportunities for interaction between them. There are various ways to realise these aims. Success may be supported (or hindered) by various structures and concepts prevalent in universities or by different schools of thought on the nature of religions, on their relation to each other, and on their place in society. Religions and theologies can be studied in parallel, in cooperation, in dialogue, or through integrative approaches. The differing theoretical positions and contextual conditions (institutional, social, political) within which (inter)religious learning takes place are an important focus of this publication, both for the possibilities they open up and the limitations they pose. This publication builds on the presentations and discussions of scholars participating at a conference at the University of Hamburg in December 2018, with some additional contributions from others in the field who were unable to attend in person.

Das 40-jährige Jubiläum des Studienprogramms "Studium in Israel" war Anlass für einen Blick auf Stand und künftige Perspektiven des christlich-jüdischen Dialogs und auf die Forschung zur rabbinischen Literatur. Das erste Thema stand bei der Jubiläumsjahrestagung im Januar 2018 in Hannover auf dem Programm, das letztgenannte auf einer Konferenz an der Hebräischen Universität Jerusalem im Juni desselben Jahres. Der vorliegende Band führt zentrale Vorträge beider Tagungen zusammen und ergänzt sie um einige weitere Beiträge. Mit seinen beiden Brennpunkten – dem christlich-jüdischen Dialog und der rabbinischen Literatur – bildet er gewissermaßen die Grundbewegung des Programms "Studium in Israel" ab: Christinnen und Christen suchen das Gespräch mit Jüdinnen und Juden und stoßen dabei auch auf die jüdische Traditionsliteratur, ihre Bedeutung für ein wirkliches Verstehen des Gegenübers und den Reichtum, der in ihr für die christliche Theologie liegt. Contributions to Jewish-Christian Dialogue and the Relevance of Rabbinic Literature] The 40th anniversary of the study program "Studium in Israel" was the occasion to take a look at Jewish-Christian dialogue and at research in Rabbinic literature asking for the situation today and for future perspectives. The first theme was central at the annual conference of "Studium in Israel" in Hannover in January 2018, the second theme at a conference at Hebrew University, Jerusalem, June 2018. This volume collects the papers of both conferences and adds some more papers on the themes mentioned. With its two foci – Jewish-Christian dialogue and Rabbinic literature – it reproduces the central movement of the study program "Studium in Israel": Christians enter into dialogue with Jews and get into contact with traditional Jewish literature, its relevance for a deeper understanding of the partner in dialogue and its richness for Christian theology.

For a generation and more, the contribution of Christian theology to interreligious understanding has been a subject of debate. Some think of theological perspectives are of themselves inherently too narrow to support interreligious learning, and argue for an approach that is neutral or, on a more popular level, grounded simply open-minded direct experience. In response, comparative theology argues that theology, as faith seeking understanding, offers a vital perspective and a way of advancing interreligious dialogue, aided rather than hindered by commitments; theological perspectives can both complement and step beyond the study of religions by methods detached and merely neutral. Thus comparative theology has been successful in persuading many that interreligious learning from one faith perspective to another is both possible and worthwhile, and so the work of comparative theology has become more recognized and established globally. With this success there has come to the fore new challenges regarding method: How does one do comparative theological work in a way that is theologically grounded, genuinely open to learning from the other, sophisticated in pursuing comparisons, and fruitful on both the academic and practical levels? How To Do Comparative Theology therefore contributes to the maturation of method in the field of comparative theological studies, learning across religious borders, by bringing together essays drawing on different Christian traditions of learning, Judaism and Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism, the wisdom of senior scholars, and also insights from a younger generation of scholars who have studied theology and religion in new ways, and are more attuned to the language of the “spiritual but not religious.” The essays in this volume show great diversity in method, and also—over and again and from many angles—coherence in intent, a commitment to one learning from the other, and a confidence that one’s home tradition benefits from fair and unhampered learning from other and very different spiritual and religious traditions. It therefore shows the diversity and coherence of comparative theology as an emerging discipline today.

Christian-Muslim relations are one of the major issues in contemporary theology of religions. This book deals with the theological foundations that have been laid for these relations in the recent official documents (1966-2005) of the Secretariat for Non-Christians/the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue. There is a continuous interrelationship in recent Roman Catholic thinking between philosophy (existentialism and personalism) and theology ("nouvelle théologie" and "kerygmatic theology"). This study shows that the doctrine of the Trinitarian nature of God is the cornerstone on which this documentation rests, and that the Trinitarian dimension of Roman Catholic theology of religions will challenge the Christology of 21st century theology.

This book highlights tensions and negotiating processes between modern society and conservative religious groups.
