At the end of the twentieth century, the concept of knowledge advanced to become one of the central factors of society and seemed to gain in importance in the twenty-first century, mostly understood as know-how and technical knowledge. Next to globalisation, knowledge seems to be the leading term both in public, as well as in scientific, discourses. What is more, the prominent status of knowledge is also reflected in the fact that it is used particularly in social sciences to explain complex social transitions and changes. Thus, one of the most widely discussed and debated social diagnoses takes place under the term Knowledge Society. However, the academic discipline of adult education has not yet profoundly engaged in the discourse on Knowledge Society. Eine zentrale Frage der modernen Theorie der Politik lautet: Wie ist Politik außerhalb der Polis möglich ? in einem Fläch- staat, in dem nicht alle mit allen kommunizieren und nicht alle über alles mite- scheiden können? Bis in die siebziger Jahre des vergangenen Jahrhunderts lau- te die optimistische Antwort: Die Medien informieren sachlich angemessen über das politische Geschehen und die Bevölkerung entwickelt anhand ihrer Beric- erstattung realistische Vorstellungen und begründete Meinungen, die zur Gru- lage ihrer Wahlentscheidung werden. Diese Annahmen wurden durch theore- sche Überlegungen und empirische Forschungsergebnisse grundlegend in Frage gestellt. Mit Blick auf die Medien gehören dazu vor allem zwei Erkenntnisse. Bei der Politik handelt es sich erstens nicht um eine Gegebenheit, über die die - dien berichten; vielmehr geschieht in der Politik vieles nur deshalb, weil die Medien berichten. Zwischen Politik und Medien bestehen komplizierte We- selbeziehungen, so dass man die Berichterstattung nicht einfach als Darstellung einer vorgegeben Realität betrachten kann. Die Politikberichterstattung der - dien orientiert sich zweitens nicht nur am politischen Geschehen, sondern auch an den Sichtweisen der Journalisten und redaktionellen Linien ihrer Publika- onsorgane. Die Medien sind keine neutralen Vermittler, die allen Politikern und Aktivitäten gleiche Chancen bieten, sondern eigenständige Akteure, die die Vermittlung von Politik an die Bevölkerung nicht nur fördern, sondern gelege- lich auch behindern.
