Ein besonderes Augenmerk wird dabei auf die Bedeutung von sozialen Interaktionen und deren Bedingungen gelegt. Der erste Teil dieser Arbeit wird sich mit der Identitätstheorie von George Herbert Mead aus seinem Werk "Mind, Self and Society" beschäftigen. Am Anfang soll erläutert werden, wie die Kommunikation zwischen Menschen durch Symbole ermöglicht wird und welchen Stellenwert die Interaktionen von Individuen für die Identitätsentwicklung hat. Im nächsten Schritt werden zwei soziale Phasen unterschieden, die ein Individuum nach Mead durchlaufen muss, um sich in Interaktionen orientieren zu können. Es wird zudem verdeutlicht, welche Aufgaben Individuen in Interaktionssituationen bewältigen müssen, um in diesen Situationen erfolgreich zu handeln und somit eine Identität zu entwickeln. Anschließend wird dargestellt, wie die Einzigartigkeit der Identität aus dessen aktiver Rolle resultiert. Der zweite Teil dieser Arbeit wird die Entwicklung der Identität nach Lothar Krappmann aus seinem Werk "Soziologische Dimensionen der Identität: strukturelle Bedingungen für die Teilnahme an Interaktionsprozessen" (1969) behandeln. Anfangs soll ausgeführt werden, welches Verhalten von Individuen erforderlich ist, um ihre Identität dauerhaft in Interaktionen darstellen und folglich entwickeln zu können. Daraufhin wird die Zusammensetzung der Identität konkretisiert und es werden die Bedingungen aufgezeigt, die erfüllt werden müssen, um eine stabile Identität dauerhaft aufrechtzuerhalten. Zudem werden aktive und passive Fähigkeiten dargestellt, welche notwendigerweise der Unterstützung der Identitätsentwicklung dienen.
