Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2005 im Fachbereich Geschichte - Sonstiges, Note: 2,0, Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz (Geschichte), Veranstaltung: Die jüdische Aufklärungsbewegung (Haskala) im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: 1778 wurde in Berlin die Freischule, eigentlich Gesellschaft für Knabenerziehung, gegründet. Sie war die erste jüdische Schule, an der auch weltliche Fächer unterrichtet wurden. Vier Jahre später wurde in Prag von der staatlichen Schulbehörde in Zusammenarbeit mit der jüdischen Gemeinde eine deutsch-jüdische Hauptschule ins Leben gerufen. Nach den Toleranzpatenten Josephs II. waren auch jüdische Kinder unterrichtspflichtig. Die Schule stellte eine Möglichkeit dar, dieser Verpflichtung nachzukommen. Beide Anstalten sind Beispiele für frühe jüdische Schulgründungen im Zeitalter der Aufklärung. Dennoch gab es erhebliche Unterschiede zwischen den beiden Projekten. Beispielsweise haben wir es in Berlin mit einer privaten Initiative zu tun, in Prag mit einer staatlichen. Thema meiner Arbeit ist ein Vergleich zwischen beiden Schulen. Zu Beginn gebe ich eine kurze Übersicht über die traditionelle jüdische Bildung und die Bildungsideen der Maskilim; letztere haben für das Thema eine große Bedeutung. Danach behandle ich die Geschichte der Freischule und anschließend jene der Schulanstalt in Prag. Für die Freischule gibt es eine hervorragende Quellensammlung aus dem Jahr 2002, die ich bei meiner Arbeit mit einbezogen habe. Deshalb konnte ich diesen Teil meiner Arbeit auf Primärquellen stützen. Ich habe mich bei der Darstellung der Schulen und ihrer Geschichten auf das Wesentliche beschränkt. Über Mendelssohns Beteiligung am Freischulprojekt (und ob eine direkte überhaupt bestanden hat) beispielsweise gibt es innerhalb der Forschung heftige Kontroversen. Auf diese oder Ähnliches einzugehen war mir im Rahmen der Arbeit nicht möglich. Punkt 4 befasst sich mit dem Vergleich zwischen beiden Schulen, wobei es hier in erster Linie um Gründung, Gründer, die wesentlichen Schulmerkmale und Probleme, mit denen man jeweils zu kämpfen hatte, geht. Anschließend folgt eine kurze Zusammenfassung.

Chronicles the exclusion, by successive regulations, of Jewish pupils and teachers from German elementary and secondary schools. By the end of 1938 Jews were restricted to private schools administered by the Reichsvereinigung der Juden in Deutschland, which were permitted to provide only an elementary education (though this could be extended to a 9th or 10th year), and to a limited number of vocational schools. The life of Jewish pupils in the German public schools had become intolerable because of the racist curriculum as well as humiliation by Nazi teachers and Nazi-indoctrinated fellow pupils. The Reichsvertretung and its successor, the Reichsvereinigung, issued guidelines and study materials that increasingly stressed Jewish content and preparation for emigration. In June 1942 the last remaining Jewish schools were closed.
