Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2022 im Fachbereich Judaistik, Note: 1,0, Universität Erfurt (Philosophische Fakultät), Veranstaltung: Deutsch-jüdische Geschichte in der Moderne, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Gegenstand dieser Hausarbeit ist es, die politische Entstehung und Entwicklung des Zionismus zu beleuchten, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf 1880 bis 1914 in Deutschland gelegt ist. „Zion“ ist der Inbegriff der jüdischen Sehnsucht nach Rückkehr in ihre Heimat, aus der sie vor tausenden Jahren vertrieben wurden. Allerdings sollte es mehrere Jahrhunderte dauern, bis konkrete Pläne zur Gründung eines Judenstaates entstehen sollten. Das 19. Jahrhundert war in Deutschland insbesondere durch Nationalbestrebungen und -bewegungen geprägt, die schließlich den Grundstein für die Reichseinigung 1871 gelegt haben. Dabei sind das Wartburgfest, das Hambacherfest und die Einigungskriege ein bekannter und vielreich gelehrter Teil der deutschen Geschichte. Was allerdings des Öfteren, insbesondere im kollektiven Geschichtsgedächtnis, ausgeklammert wird, sind Nationalbewegungen in Europa und Deutschland, die andere Ziele verfolgten. Dazu gehören ebenfalls die Bestrebungen der Juden, in ihre Heimatstadt Jerusalem zurückzukehren bzw. einen Nationalstaat zu gründen. Diese Bewegung trägt den Namen „Zionismus“ und hatte erheblichen Einfluss auf die Entstehung des heutigen Israels.

Historian Tim Grady examines the efforts of the 100,000 Jewish soldiers who served in the German military (12,000 of whom died), as well as the various activities Jewish communities supported at home, such as raising funds for the war effort and securing vital food supplies. However, Grady’s research goes much deeper: he shows that German Jews were never at the periphery of Germany’s warfare, but were in fact heavily involved. The author finds that many German Jews were committed to the same brutal and destructive war that other Germans endorsed, and he discusses how the conflict was in many ways lived by both groups alike. What none could have foreseen was the dangerous legacy they created together, a legacy that enabled Hitler’s rise to power and planted the seeds of the Holocaust to come.

Everyday Zionism examines Zionist activism in East-Central Europe during the years of war, occupation, revolution, the collapse of empires, and the formation of nation states in the years 1914 to 1920. Against the backdrop of the Great War--its brutal aftermath and consequent violence--the day-to-day encounters between Zionist activists and the Jewish communities in the region gave the movement credibility, allowed it to win support and to establish itself as a leading force in Jewish political and social life for decades to come. Through activists' efforts, Zionism came to mean something new: Rather than being concerned with debates over Jewish nationhood and pioneering efforts in Palestine, it came to be about aiding starving populations, organizing soup-kitchens, establishing orphanages, schools, kindergartens, and hospitals, negotiating with the authorities, and leading self-defence against pogroms. Through this engagement Zionism evolved into a mass movement that attracted and inspired tens of thousands of Jews throughout the region. Everyday Zionism approaches the major European events of the period from the dual perspectives of Jewish communities and the Zionist activists on the ground, demonstrating how war, revolution, empire, and nation held very different meanings for people, depending on their local circumstances. Based on extensive archival research, the study shows how during the war and its aftermath East-Central Europe saw a large-scale nation-building project by Zionist activists who fought for and led their communities to shape for them a national future.

Jahrzehntelang vertrat der Berliner jüdische Politiker und Diplomat Richard Lichtheim (1885–1963) die Interessen der Zionisten gegenüber den herrschenden Mächten der Zeit. Als Emissär der Zionistischen Organisation bemühte er sich während des Zweiten Weltkriegs vom schweizerischen Genf aus um die Rettung verfolgter Juden und verstand dabei als einer der ersten zeitgenössischen Beobachter, dass es sich bei den nationalsozialistischen Massenmorden an den europäischen Judenheiten um ein Verbrechen ungekannten Ausmaßes handelte: um ihre systematische und totale Vernichtung. Zuvor hatte Lichtheim während des Ersten Weltkriegs im osmanischen Konstantinopel gewirkt, wo es ihm durch geschicktes Verhandeln gelungen war, die Maßnahmen der repressiven jungtürkischen Minderheitenpolitik von der jüdischen Ansiedlung in Palästina abzuwenden. Die sich wandelnde politische Realität in Europa und Palästina brachte Lichtheim immer wieder dazu, auch die eigenen Nationalismusvorstellungen zu überdenken: Verfocht er in der Zwischenkriegszeit noch die Maximalforderungen der Zionisten-Revisionisten, wurde er vor dem Hintergrund des Holocaust schließlich ein Anhänger der linksliberalen Partei Aliya Hadasha. Andrea Kirchner entfaltet Lichtheims von Brüchen und Neuausrichtungen geprägte Biografie und zeigt, wie eng diese mit der komplexen Geschichte der jüdischen Nationalidee verknüpft ist, deren Verwirklichung immer wieder existenziellen Bedrohungen ausgesetzt war.

Als sich in den 1890er Jahren in Berlin die ersten national-jüdischen Vereine gründeten, begeisterten sich nur wenige deutsche Juden für zionistische Ideen. Einer, der dies früh tat, war Theodor Zlocisti (1874–1943). Als Kind einer aus Russland stammenden Familie in Ostpreußen geboren, wuchs Zlocisti im Berliner Scheunenviertel auf. Hier verlebte er seine Kindheit zwischen verschiedenen Welten: dem proletarischen Umfeld im Berliner Nord-Osten, der traditionell-orthodoxen Ausrichtung des Elternhauses, dem Einfluss osteuropäisch-jüdischer Kultur, aber auch dem Aufstiegs- und Integrationsstreben der Familie in Deutschland. Noch als Schüler schloss er sich einem zionistischen Verein an und gehörte zu den Protagonisten der Bewegung im deutschen Kaiserreich. 1920 emigrierte er als einer der ersten deutschen Zionisten nach Palästina und ließ sich in Tel Aviv nieder. Auf den ersten Blick scheint Zlocistis Biografie damit geradezu linear verlaufen zu sein: Ein junger Jude, der Zionist wird und aus dem antisemitischen Europa nach Palästina auswandert. Doch diese teleologische Linie trügt und verdeckt die Widersprüche, die sein Leben kennzeichneten. Im Mittelpunkt des Buches stehen deshalb multiple Zugehörigkeiten: Denn Zlocistis Leben war davon geprägt, dass er sich verschiedenen, teils widersprechenden Ideen und Gruppen zugehörig fühlte. Schon seine Zeitgenossen hatten deshalb Probleme ihn einzuordnen. Sein Zionismus ging zudem nicht einfach mit einer Abgrenzung von der nicht-jüdischen Umwelt einher. Zlocisti sah sich vielmehr zeitlebens der deutschen Kultur verbunden – auch nach seiner Auswanderung. Diesen oft widersprüchlichen Wegen spürt die Biografie nach. Sie gewährt damit Einblicke in die Positionierungsmöglichkeiten deutscher Zionisten jenseits teleologischer Nationalgeschichtsschreibung und hilft, den deutschen Zionismus als ambivalentes und mit seiner deutschen Umwelt verwobenes Phänomen zu verstehen.
