Nach dem totalen Zusammenbruch der alten Ordnung, der Niederlage der k.u.k. Monarchie im Ersten Weltkrieg, zerfiel das Habsburgerreich in eine Reihe von neuen Kleinstaaten, der Kaiser musste abdanken. In Wien gründeten die politischen Parteien den "deutschösterreichischen" Staat und riefen am 12. November 1918 die Republik aus, die sich Deutschland anschließen sollte. Durch den Friedensvertrag von Saint-Germain wurde das neue Staatswesen jedoch zur Unabhängigkeit gezwungen und hatte sich auch einen neuen Namen zu geben: Republik Österreich. Besonders in ihren ersten Jahren kämpfte sie mit scheinbar unüberwindlichen Problemen: Die vom langen Krieg erschöpfte Bevölkerung hungerte und fror, die Nachbarländer erschwerten den wirtschaftlichen Aufbau des Landes durch ihre hartnäckige Abgrenzungspolitik. Überhaupt galt der von Wien aus regierte Staat vielen als lebensunfähig, folglich drängten die westlichen Bundesländer auf die Abspaltung. Durch die horrende Inflation und die massive Verschuldung drohten der Ersten Republik bereits 1922 der Staatsbankrott, die Zerschlagung und Aufteilung auf die Nachbarstaaten. Walter Rauscher schildert die Existenzkrise der Anfangsjahre der Republik, geht auf politische, wirtschaftliche und soziale Aspekte der Herausbildung des österreichischen Staats ein und zeigt, wie mühevoll und riskant dessen Entwicklung von Anfang an war.

Paths out of the Apocalypse uses violence as a prism through which to investigate the profound social, cultural, and political changes experienced by (post-) Habsburg Central Europe during and immediately after the Great War. It compares attitudes toward, and experiences and practices of,physical violence in the mostly Czech-speaking territories of Bohemia and Moravia, the German-speaking territories that would constitute the Republic of Austria after 1918, and the mostly German-speaking region of South Tyrol. Based on research in national and local archives and copious secondaryliterature, the study argues that, in the context of total war, physical violence became a predominant means of conceptualizing and expressing social-political demands as well as a means of demarcating various notions of community and belonging. The authors apply an interdisciplinary understandingof violence informed by sociological and psychological theories as well as by rigorous empirical historiographical approach. First, they examine the most severe kind of physical violence - murder - against the backdrop of shifting scientific and media discourses during the war and its immediateaftermath. Second, the authors use numerous cases of collective violence, ranging from less serious everyday conflicts to massive hunger demonstrations and riots, to unravel its 'language', thus deciphering the attitudes and values shared among an ever-growing group of perpetrators. Paths out of theApocalypse thus fundamentally rethinks some key topics currently debated in the scholarship on early twentieth-century Central Europe, the First World War, violence, nationalism, and modern European comparative social and cultural history.

The two main themes of this selection of articles by Professor Hroch are the process of nation formation during the 19th century, especially in the case of 'smaller' European nations, i.e. those without statehood, and the social and political aspects of the transition from a pre-modern, feudal and traditional society to a modern capitalist one and the uneven pace of this change in the West and East of Europe. The author argues that we cannot study the process of nation-formation as a mere product of some nebulous 'nationalism'; we have to understand it as a part of social and cultural transformation, as a component of modernization of European societies, even though this modernization did not occur synchronically and had its regional specificities. Many of the papers focus specifically on the Czech case, but throughout there is an emphasis on comparative history.
