This volume is the twelfth to date in a series of works in French or English presenting the epochs and movements of a Comparative History of Literatures in European Languages (Histoire Comparée des Littératures de Langues Européennes). The original intention of the editors was to publish a four-volume history of European literature from 1760-1820, and the first of these volumes, Des Lumières au Romantisme. Genres en Vers, appeared as long ago as 1982. The volumes Genres en Prose and Théâtre are still awaited. In their absence the present volume, Epoche im _berblick, attempts a more comprehensive and rigorous treatment of the period and its historiographical problems than was initially planned, providing the reader with an overview of sixty eventful years of European literary history years in which German Classicism coincided with the birth, initially in Germany and England, of Romanticism. And at the centre of this turbulent period of European intellectual and literary history stands the French Revolution.

Rhetorik ist seit ihren Anfängen dem Vorwurf der Manipulation ausgesetzt, gegen den schon in der Antike eine ‚Rhetorik im Dienst der Vernunft‘ aufgeboten worden ist. Die Untersuchung ist der Transformation dieses Konzepts in Aufklärung und Romantik gewidmet. Am Beispiel von Johann Christoph Gottscheds Lehrbuch der Rhetorik wird ein Versuch der Frühaufklärung analysiert und am Beispiel seiner ‚Festreden‘ die Praxis einer ‚Rhetorik der Vernunft‘ untersucht. Die Auseinandersetzung mit diesem Konzept im Rahmen der ‚selbstreflexiven Aufklärung‘ wird am Beispiel der Darstellung von dessen Scheitern in Christoph Martin Wielands „Geschichte des Agathon" analysiert. Bei der Transformation von Theorie und Praxis der ‚Beredsamkeit‘ in Texten der Romantik stehen neue Herausforderungen – Ideal der Kunstautonomie und Neubegründung des Verhältnisses von Mündlichkeit und Schriftlichkeit – im Mittelpunkt. Am Beispiel von A. W. Schlegels ‚Berliner Vorlesungen‘ wird abschließend der Typus der ‚Öffentlichen Vorlesung‘ als mediengeschichtlich innovative Antwort auf Probleme der Rhetorik um 1800 einer eingehenden Analyse unterzogen.

The nationally motivated hostility towards Jews did not just start with Richard Wagner or the anti-Semitic writings produced in Imperial Germany from 1871 onwards. As the study shows, even the writers of the Romantic generation in the early 19th century drew up their idea of a "German character" which was rigorously delineated from alleged Jewish characteristics. This is shown in the study using both essayistic and fictional texts by Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano among others.
