A comprehensive introduction to the plastics life cycle—the impacts on our lives, our future, and our planet—and the actions we can take. Everywhere we look, we are surrounded by plastics: perhaps you have a book in one hand and your phone—made of various metals, plastics, and glass—in the other, or you are reading this on your polyurethane mattress after having flipped on a plastic light switch. In this Essential Knowledge series volume, Imari Walker-Franklin and Jenna Jambeck provide a deep exploration of the entire life of plastic things—plastics production and use, plastic waste generation and management, the environmental and societal impacts of plastics in our environment, and, finally, the policies that can help reduce pollution caused by our heavy use of plastics. One of the most current and comprehensive summaries on the subject, Plastics covers not only ocean and terrestrial plastic pollution but also the potential harms of microplastics on the human body. The authors also explain why we use plastic for so many products, how trash ends up in even the most remote corners of our world, and the alternatives and interventions that can help address our overreliance on this virtually imperishable material. As easily digestible to read as it is important, this book empowers its readers with the crucial knowledge and information they need to make thoughtful consumer choices, influence change, and spark inspiration.

Materials And Sustainability written by Julia L Freer Goldstein and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-04-12 with Business & Economics categories.
This book examines sustainable manufacturing, from the extraction of materials to processing, use, and disposal, and argues that significant changes in all of the above are needed for the world to progress toward a more circular economy. Materials and processing methods are usually chosen with performance as the key metric. Why has our society embraced plastics? Because they work. In most cases, they are lighter, easier to manufacture, and less expensive than the metal, wood, glass, or stone they have replaced. Why do industrial manufacturers use toxic chemicals? Because they are effective, but the unintended consequences may be severe. By learning how various materials are made and what happens when they are recycled, readers will better understand the value of materials and the challenges that manufacturers face when trying to make their facilities and products less toxic and less wasteful. The three chapters in Part I provide essential background about materials in the circular economy, chemicals, and waste. Part II delves into specific materials. It includes chapters on plastics, metals, wood and paper products, glass, and novel materials. Part III covers recycling and manufacturing processes, and Part IV delves into practical considerations, including the effect of regulations, concluding with a chapter that helps readers translate the information presented into action. Interviews with industry experts round out the chapters and offer valuable insights. Materials and Sustainability is a must-read for business professionals who are serious about making their companies as environmentally responsible as possible and for business and engineering students who want to begin their careers with practical knowledge about materials and their impacts.

Handbook Of Microplastic Pollution In The Environment written by Tonni Kurniawan and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-06-27 with Science categories.
In this handbook, one in a series of three, leading global contributors analyze approaches to microplastics treatment, address advanced techniques for mediating microplastic pollution, and explore policy perspectives on the implications of microplastic pollution for human and ecosystem health. Through this book, readers will develop knowledge of leading and emerging technologies and techniques for monitoring and remediating microplastic pollution in the environment and understanding of the policy implications with regard to the human and ecological health risks associated with microplastic pollution. To achieve this, the book first explores current techniques for monitoring microplastics, such as remote sensing techniques, and their challenges and opportunities. In the second section, it then addresses policy perspectives on the management of microplastic pollution in aquatic environments and in agricultural soil. In taking a global approach to both sections, the contributors bring a wealth of knowledge and practical information to equip readers with a broad and up-to-date understanding of the geographical and ecological factors that can affect policy decisions. This enables readers to enact appropriate policies on the management and remediation of microplastic pollution that take into account the context and requirements of each individual situation. This, in turn, reduces the impact of microplastic pollution on biodiversity and ecosystems and minimizes the associated economic and human costs. For a wider perspective, readers are encouraged to refer to the other two titles in this series, subtitled Microplastic Pollution in Aquatic Environments and Microplastic Pollution in the Soil. In its exploration of the technologies and techniques for monitoring and treating microplastics and related policy perspectives, this handbook has deep implications and practical ramifications for academics, industry-based researchers, and policymakers to take a new direction to the reduction of microplastics in aquatic environments and agricultural soils around the world.

Food Safety Aspects Of Cell Based Food written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and has been published by Food & Agriculture Org. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-03-27 with Technology & Engineering categories.
Cell-based food production, which is the field of growing animal agricultural products directly from cell cultures, has been explored as an alleged sustainable alternative to the conventional livestock agricultural system. As commercial cell-based food production continues to expand, the urgency increases to address one of the most important questions of consumers, the question of food safety. Thus, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), has developed the present document to engage with respective Members and relevant stakeholders by proactively sharing the current knowledge to identify concrete ways to inform consumers and all other stakeholders about the food safety considerations for cell-based food products. This document includes a literature synthesis of relevant terminology issues, principles of cell-based food production processes and the global landscape of regulatory frameworks for cell-based food production. Case studies from Israel, Qatar and Singapore have been included to highlight different scopes, structures and contexts surrounding their regulatory frameworks for cell-based food. The results of the FAO-led Expert Consultation, where comprehensive food safety hazard identification was conducted, form the core of the document and the identified hazards are summarized with causal-chain examples. The way forward will consist of continuing to invest in research and development in order to understand whether the alleged benefits in increased sustainability can be realized. In this regard, it will be important to closely observe as to what extent, if any, cell-based foods result in differences from conventionally produced foods.

Plastics are crucial materials that are used in daily life. They are manufactured and used until they become waste that negatively impacts the environment and public health. These plastic wastes break down into small particles known as microplastics (MPs) via changes in environmental conditions (i.e., sunlight, temperature, weathering, and irradiation). This reduction in size increases the toxic potential of MPs. This book provides a comprehensive overview of MPs, including the challenges and advances in their effective removal from our environment.
