Difficult Empathy takes up the question of empathy as fundamentally a rhetorical concern, focusing on the ways we encounter and understand one another in what we read and write, hear and say. Humane Composition Pedagogy (HCP) provides a pedagogical framework for reconciling the current disconnect between neoliberal higher education policies (sometimes called the “business model” of higher education) and the demand for kinder and more human-centered instruction. Humane education is a pedagogical model, with origins in secondary education, that considers emotional wellbeing, civic engagement, and intrinsic motivation as central to learning. The authors suggest that humane pedagogies can and should be adapted to higher education contexts, as a means of synthesizing literatures on the pedagogies of inclusion and care from noteworthy scholars including Jamil Zaki, Lisa Blankenship, Asao B. Inoue, Ruchika Tulshyan, and more. Without feeding a crisis narrative or calling for a complete systemic overhaul, HCP offers both an alternative to, and an act of resistance against, dehumanizing forces in today’s colleges and universities. In exploring its three tenets–empathy, wellbeing, and belonging–the authors call for improved collaboration among key stakeholders (faculty, students, and administrators) to center the human experience in how we approach college instruction, thereby allowing universities to better fulfill their educational missions.

This book presents empirical research uncovering the views and experiences of Polish judges regarding the utilization of empathy in their work. Although there is growing interest in the role of empathy in judicial decision-making, there is little research on how judges themselves approach this issue. This volume offers an alternative to the usual focus on common law jurisdictions. It adopts a perspective that underscores the impact of professional pressures on judges’ empathic abilities, leading to a form of "empathy labor" influenced by the unique characteristics of the judicial profession. It offers an in-depth examination of judges’ opinions, collected through an empirical study involving in-depth interviews. The narrative delves into real cases and judicial behaviors discussed by judges, providing reference to relevant literature from other jurisdictions. The core finding of the study reveals that while judges may differ in their approaches to empathy in a judicial context, many of their practices and strategies can be linked to empathy-like phenomena. The findings also substantiate the claim that empathy used by judges is not the same as judicial empathy, which covers empathic abilities integrated into performing the judicial role. This applied theoretical perspective of "empathy labor" offers an intriguing view of how the occupational context influences judges’ empathic inclinations throughout their careers. In addition to demonstrating how judges understand the role of empathy in their work, the book outlines a scenario for empathy training based on their experiences and expectations. The trickster figure is an ancient and variable figure, versions of which populate the myths and folklore of many human cultures worldwide. Conceptualising the trilogy as a single aggregate text with a clear narrative arc, the author explores the variety of trickster figures present in the films and draws clear parallels with the surrounding social and political context. Departing from the central argument that the Batman trilogy shows a variety of trickster characters, even Batman himself, this book shows contemporary trickster figures to be rich and relevant cultural resources that can focus our attention on those elements of the social order that have become too rigid, hierarchical, or exclusionary. The author argues that they can model tactics for engaging with tricksters when they inevitably arise in civic culture, offering insights about how to manage interactions with these figures who can be both productively disruptive and potentially destructive. This book pays close attention to the characters portrayed in the Nolan Batman trilogy—not only the Batman and the Joker but the more minor characters as well—to discover what trickster-like tactics they may offer.
