Digital Diversity: Youth, Equity, and Information Technology is about youth, schools, and the use of technology. Youth are instrumental in finding novel ways to access and use technology. They are directly affected by changes such as the proliferation of computers in schools and elsewhere, and the increasingly heavy use of the Internet for both information sharing and for communication. The contributors to this volume investigate how the resources provided by information and communication technology (ICT) are made available to different groups of young people (as defined by gender, race, rural location, Aboriginal status, street youth status) and how they do (or do not) develop facility and competence with this technology. How does access vary for these different groups of youth? Which young people develop facility with ICT? What impact has this technology had on their learning and their lives? These are among the issues examined. Youth from a wide variety of settings are included in the study, including Inuit youth in the high arctic. Rather than mandate how youth should/could better use technology (as much of the existing literature does) the contributors focus on how youth and educators are actually using technology. By paying attention to the routine use and understandings of ICTs by youth and those teaching youth, the book highlights the current gaps in policy and practice. It challenges assumptions around the often taken-for-granted links between technology, pedagogy, and educational outcomes for youth in order to highlight a range of important equity issues.

Master's Thesis from the year 2024 in the subject Computer Science - Commercial Information Technology, grade: 1,3, University of Hagen (Lehrstuhl für Betriebswirtschaftslehre, insb. Gestaltung soziotechnischer Informationssysteme), course: Abschlussarbeit, language: English, abstract: This academic study employs a systematic literature review to examine the current state of research on digital diversity within the field of Information Systems (IS). The term digital diversity refers to the heterogeneity of user groups with respect to their demographic characteristics and the varied utilization of digital technologies. The objective of this analysis is to provide a comprehensive overview of existing research, identify research gaps, and outline future directions for investigation. To achieve this, relevant studies were systematically searched for and evaluated in the eight leading IS journals. The analysis encompassed the dimensions of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, religion, and sexual orientation, resulting in the identification of 210 relevant publications. Research on diversity in IS has evolved significantly over time, with a marked increase in publications after 2005, indicating growing academic interest. The findings reveal an uneven distribution of attention devoted to the individual dimensions. Ethnicity and gender are the most frequently studied topics, while religion and sexual orientation are significantly underrepresented. In addition to examining individual diversity dimensions, intersectional approaches that analyze the overlap of multiple dimensions were also considered. The study concludes with a critical discussion of the results and provides suggestions for future research to better understand digital diversity in its entirety and to further establish it within IS. This systematic literature review makes a significant contribution by deepening the understanding of digital diversity, filling existing research gaps, and providing impetus for the inclusive design of digital technologies and their use.

“In times like these, it’s easy to throw up our hands and conclude that we just can’t get along. But Livermore shows how we can do better.” —Daniel H. Pink, #1 New York Times–bestselling author of Drive The divides between us seem to keep growing no matter the issue—politics, race relations, religion, and the list goes on. How can we bridge our divides without forcing everyone to conform to the same thinking and behavior? Cultural intelligence, a scientific model originally designed for working with people from different cultures, is ideally suited to bridge our polarizing differences. Here, David Livermore, the leading expert in the field, teaches us how to use the method he has taught global executives and foreign diplomats to navigate difficult conversations with anyone. Livermore uses his renowned work in cultural intelligence to address such everyday challenges as: How should I respond to a racist comment? What should I do when someone is completely closed to a different perspective? How can I persuade polarized groups to move beyond “agree to disagree”? How do I handle the emotional fatigue that comes with polarizing conversations and relationships? Digital, Diverse & Divided combines groundbreaking research, riveting stories, and proven practical strategies to build a more culturally intelligent—and less stressful—world. “What can each of us do to address what feels like an intractable problem in our organizations and communities—polarization? David Livermore shares what he has learned from his own research and journey about what it takes to develop cultural intelligence.” —Linda A. Hill, PhD, Professor, Harvard Business School, and coauthor of Collective Genius

Imagine a future world where computers can create universes -- digital environments made from binary ones and zeros. Imagine that within these universes there exist biological forms that reproduce, grow, and think. Imagine plantlike forms, ant colonies, immune systems, and brains, all adapting, evolving, and getting better at solving problems. Imagine if our computers became greenhouses for a new kind of nature. Just think what digital biology could do for us. Perhaps it could evolve new designs for us, think up ways to detect fraud using digital neurons, or solve scheduling problems with ants. Perhaps it could detect hackers with immune systems or create music from the patterns of growth of digital seashells. Perhaps it would allow our computers to become creative and inventive. Now stop imagining. digital biology is an intriguing glimpse into the future of technology by one of the most creative thinkers working in computer science today. As Peter J. Bentley explains, the next giant step in computing technology is already under way as computer scientists attempt to create digital universes that replicate the natural world. Within these digital universes, we will evolve solutions to problems, construct digital brains that can learn and think, and use immune systems to trap and destroy computer viruses. The biological world is the model for the next generation of computer software. By adapting the principles of biology, computer scientists will make it possible for computers to function as the natural world does. In practical terms, this will mean that we will soon have "smart" devices, such as houses that will keep the temperature as we like it and automobiles that will start only for drivers they recognize (through voice recognition or other systems) and that will navigate highways safely and with maximum fuel efficiency. Computers will soon be powerful enough and small enough that they can become part of clothing. "Digital agents" will be able to help us find a bank or restaurant in a city that we have never visited before, even as we walk through the airport. Miniature robots may even be incorporated into our bodies to monitor our health. Digital Biology is also an exploration of biology itself from a new perspective. We must understand how nature works in its most intimate detail before we can use these same biological processes inside our computers. Already scientists engaged in this work have gained new insights into the elegant simplicity of the natural universe. This is a visionary book, written in accessible, nontechnical language, that explains how cutting-edge computer science will shape our world in the coming decades.
