Recent years have brought many changes to the world of mass media. The In ternet and mobile communications technology have provided consumers with interactive digital services. Television is catching up with this trend through the digitalization process. Digital television is a hybrid platform combining elements from classical analog television and the Internet, providing modern multimedia services on a familiar platform. In short, digital TV is a gateway to the world of interactive digital media. Digital TV brings consumers into the television service arena and offers them new degrees of freedom. However, as the service and multimedia content types diversify and the services and their content increase, television is facing many of the same challenges of complexity and information overflow faced by other digital media. Metadata can handle the diverse services and content of digital TV effi. ciently and in a consumer-friendly way. Metadata means that the data are accompanied by other data which describe them. As data about data, meta data can provide an insight into syntactically and semantically complex data by distilling their essence to a set of simple descriptors. Metadata also helps to structure and manage information in diverse settings. The use of metadata in broadcast multimedia should not be restricted to being merely a tool for coping with the challenges of a complex networked multimedia environment. Instead, metadata ofTers new opportunities for the development of innovative services.

The book shows how digital-interactive television (digiTV) will affect the relation between the broadcaster and the consumer. Standardization processes, technological paradigms, and application development issues will be discussed. The emerging applications, innovations, and future concepts are described in detail. The triangle: content - end-user - technology will be conceptualized to create a vision and to overview provision of services that will be major innovative elments in the world of digital television. From the technical side, eXtensible Markup Language (XML)-based metadata standards are a major element in realizing new innovative concepts in the world of digital, interactive television. This book clearly shows by the introduction of applications and use-scenarios, which conceptual requirements and metadata models are applicable, which metadata subsets are applicable due to resource limitations, which metadata aspects are needed for nonlinear content viewing, etc. The book gives a broad and detailed both visionary and technical overview useful for graduates, engineers, and scientists; and last but not least decision-makers in the broadcasting industry.

The rapid advancement of digital multimedia technologies has not only revolutionized the production and distribution of audiovisual content, but also created the need to efficiently analyze TV programs to enable applications for content managers and consumers. Leaving no stone unturned, TV Content Analysis: Techniques and Applications provides a detailed exploration of TV program analysis techniques. Leading researchers and academics from around the world supply scientifically sound treatment of recent developments across the related subject areas—including systems, architectures, algorithms, applications, research results, emerging approaches, and open issues. The book is organized into six parts: Content Extraction - deals with automatic analysis and annotation of TV content, addressing generic semantics and concepts as well as TV content Content Structuring - examines techniques for identifying interesting parts of TV programs and supplying direct access to it Content Recommendation - explores the problem of providing users with the most relevant content, addressing the problem of an ever-increasing amount of available content Content Quality - considers visual perception and quality approaches in the multi-display TV context and the specific mobile TV scenario Web and Social TV - presents studies on Web and TV convergence and on how user-generated content in Web 2.0 applications can be used to enhance services Content Production - covers postproduction, visual effects, and presentation standards Most parts start with a chapter that provides an overview of that area, followed by state-of-the-art approaches focusing on specific issues covered in that section. Reporting on recent advances in the field, the book provides you with the global view and up-to-date understanding of emerging trends needed to participate in the development of the digital TV domain.

The Evolution of TV Systems, Content, and Users towards Interactivity provides an overview of the evolution of TV systems, TV content, and TV users towards interactivity, with a special focus on sociability aspects. Three basic concepts are introduced, namely, content editing, content sharing, and content control. Content editing corresponds to the activity of developing or organizing multimedia material, traditionally the domain of professionals but also including user-generated content. Content sharing refers to all kinds of social activities that might occur around television watching, such as chatting about television content and sharing content. Finally, content control corresponds to the activity of deciding what to watch and how to watch it. A simple taxonomy (edit-share-control) is proposed as an evolutionary step over the established hierarchical produce-deliver-consume paradigm. The Evolution of TV Systems, Content, and Users towards Interactivity looks at how research in the area has spanned a rather diverse set of scientific subfields, such as multimedia, HCI, CSCW, UIST, user modeling, media and communication sciences. It demonstrates how each disciplinary effort has contributed and why the full potential of interactive TV has not yet been fulfilled. Finally, it describes how interdisciplinary approaches could provide solutions to some notable contemporary research issues. The Evolution of TV Systems, Content, and Users towards Interactivity is aimed at students and researchers, practitioners and developers. It assumes a basic understanding of past and current practices on the design of computer applications, networks and media content.

The 18th Tyrrhenian Workshop on digital communications is devoted to wi- less communications. In the last decade, wireless communications research boosted launching new standards and proposing new techniques for the - cess technology. We moved from the UTRA standard capable to transmit 0. 5bit/s/Hz to WLAN which is promising 2. 7bit/s/Hz. Now wireless c- munication systems are facing a ?ourishing of new proposal moving from multiple antennas at transmitter and receiver side (MIMO systems), to new powerfulForwardErrorCorrectionCodes,toadaptiveradioresourcemana- mentalgorithms. Thenewchallenge, however, isthemovetowardsmultimedia communications and IP technology. This move implies e?orts in several new aspects. First of all an open network, as IP is, imposes the necessity of a - cure network, to guarantee the privacy of the ongoing communications, avoid the use of the networks by unauthorized customers, avoid the misuses and the charge to third parties of the cost of the connection. Also, quality of service (QoS) of the communications is becoming a must in IP networks which are carrying services which need a guaranteed QoS as telephony, real time s- vices, etc. To get this new target some form of access control to the network must be setup. Recently, new form of communication networks has appeared to collect data for several applications (sensor networks, ad hoc networks, etc. ) and they need a connection with a backbone network which could be a wireless one with a larger range than the sensor or ad hoc networks.
