Recently, digital interventions have proliferated and show promising results in preventing and treating common mental health disorders, such as depression, in different settings (e.g., workplaces). Digital interventions may have advantages over face-to-face interventions (e.g., more accessible; easily customisable; real-time monitoring). However, despite efforts made by healthcare systems worldwide (e.g., apps on prescription in Germany), actual adoption is still rather low in many countries. It is essential to understand innovation acceptance in order to tailor digital interventions and to measure user technology acceptance. In this way, determinants can be identified to derive strategies to promote acceptance. Technology acceptance has been studied extensively, resulting in the development of various theoretical models (e.g., Technology Acceptance Model-TAM; Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology-UTAUT, UTAUT2). Besides several methodological strengths, technology acceptance models also have various limitations, which makes it difficult to investigate causality or to generalize findings across different contexts, populations, and cultures.

The first book of its kind to offer a transdisciplinary exploration of mass communication approaches to mental health In the Handbook of Mental Health Communication, a panel of leading scholars from multiple disciplines presents a comprehensive overview of theory and research at the intersection of mass communication and mental health. With timely and authoritative coverage of the impact of message-based mental health promotion, this unique volume places mental health communication in the context of socio-cultural causes of mental illness — synthesizing public health, psychopathology, and mass communication scholarship into a single volume. Throughout the Handbook, nearly one hundred contributing authors emphasize that understanding communication effects on mental health outcomes begins with recognizing how people across the spectrum of mental illness process relevant information about their own mental health. Fully integrated chapters collectively translate biased information attention, interpretation, and memory in mental health illness to real-world implications of mental illness symptomatology and across the spectrum of mental health issues and disorders. Providing a clear, evidence-based picture of what mental health promotion should look like, The Handbook of Mental Health Communication is an invaluable resource for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, scholars, researchers, lecturers, and all health communication practitioners.

Brain, Decision Making, and Mental Health acknowledges that thinking is not a constant phenomenon but varies considerably across cultures. Critical thinking is particularly important in bridging thinking divisions and its applicability across sciences, particularly medical sciences. We see critical thinking as educable and the arts as means to achieve this purpose. We address the multidimensional relationship between thinking and health and related mechanisms. Thinking mainly affects emotion regulation and executive function; in other words, both mental and physical health are related as a function of thoughts. Considering the thinking‐feeling‐emotion regulation/executive function pathway, it would be reasonable to propose thinking capacities‐based interventions to impact emotion regulation and executive function, such as mindfulness and psychotherapy. We review decision-making taking place in integrated and social contexts and discuss the decision-making styles-decision outcomes relation. Finally, artificial thinking and intelligence prepare us for decision-making outside the human mind.

The WHO constitution states: "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." There are multiple factors that contribute towards good mental health including civil liberties, politics, economics, social rights, and cultural diversity, and quality of life of the individual and the society as a whole. The promotion of mental health spans many disciplines in order to cover all these factors such as education, work, justice, housing, and welfare. Therefore, it is important to collaborate to create an environment that promotes and supports mental health to improve psychological well-being and allow individuals to realize their own abilities, work productively and contribute to society and live fulfilling lives. There is no health without mental health that is vital to individuals, families, communities, and societies across the world and so the goal of this Research Topic is to collate ideas and research of strategies for the promotion of mental health across all disciplines in order to raise awareness of mental health promotion and protection to ensure it’s incorporation in national mental health policies going forwards. This is of particular relevance given the mental health crisis being experienced across the world right now.
