Digital television (DTV) is a new type of broadcasting technology that will transform television as we now know it. DTV technology will allow broadcasters to offer television with movie-quality picture and CD-quality sound, along with a variety of other enhancements. DTV technology can also be used to transmit large amounts of other data into the home, which may be accessible by using one's computer or television set. DTV enables broadcasters to offer television with movie-quality picture and sound. It also offers greater multicasting and interactive capabilities. This book explores the many enhancing features, legal policies and reasons why consumers are now switching to digital television.

Digital television (DTV) is a new television service representing the most significant development in television technology since the advent of color television in the 1950s. DTV can provide sharper pictures, a wider screen, CD-quality sound, better color rendition, and other new services currently being developed. A successful deployment of DTV requires: the development by content providers of compelling digital programming; the delivery of digital signals to consumers by broadcast television stations, as well as cable and satellite television systems; and the widespread purchase and adoption by consumers of digital television equipment. A key issue in the Congressional debate over the digital transition has been addressing the millions of American over-the-air households whose existing analog televisions will require converter boxes in order to receive digital signals when the analog signal is turned off.

Digital Television ("Digital TeleVision Broadcasting" [DTVB] or "Digital Video Broadcasting" [DVB]) has become one of the most exciting develop ments in the area of consumer electronics at the end of the twentieth century. The term digital television is not typically used either to describe the digitisa tion of the production studio or to indicate the advent of digital signal proc essing in the integrated circuits used in television receivers. Rather, digital television refers to the source coding of audio, data and video signals, the channel coding and the methods for the transport of DVB signals via all kinds of transmission media. The term normally also embraces the technologies used for the return path from the consumer back to the programme provider, techniques for scrambling and conditional access, the concepts of data broad casting, the software platforms used in the terminal devices, as well as the user interfaces providing easy access to DVB services. The aim of this book is to describe the technologies of digital television.

Digital Television deals with all present-day TV transmission methods, i.e. MPEG, DVB, ATSC and ISDB-T. The DVD Video is also discussed to some extent. The discussion is focussed on dealing with these subjects in as practical a way as possible. Although mathematical formulations are used, they are in most cases only utilized to supplement the text. The book also contains chapters dealing with basic concepts such as digital modulation or transformations into the frequency domain. A major emphasis is placed on the measuring techniques used on these various digital TV signals. Practical examples and hints concerning measurement are provided. The book starts with the analog TV baseband signal and then continues with the MPEG-2 data stream, digital video, digital audio and the compression methods. After an excursion into the digital modulation methods, all the mentioned transmission methods are discussed in detail. Interspersed between these are found the chapters on the relevant measuring technique.

The Digital Television Transition and Public Safety Act of 2005 requires all full-power TV stations in the U.S. to cease analog broadcasting by Feb. 17, 2009, known as the digital television (DTV) transition. Prior to this date, the TV broadcast industry must take a series of actions to ensure that over-the-air programming will continue to be available once the transition is complete. For ex., broadcast stations must obtain, install, and test the necessary equipment needed to finalize their digital facilities. This report examines: (1) the status of broadcast stations in transitioning to digital; (2) the extent to which broadcast stations are encountering issues; and (3) the actions the FCC has taken to guide broadcasters in the digital transition.
