Sustainable food systems are fundamental to ensuring that future generations are food secure and eat healthy diets. To transition towards sustainability, many food system activities must be reconstructed, and myriad actors around the world are starting to act locally. While some changes are easier than others, knowing how to navigate through them to promote sustainable consumption and production practices requires complex skill sets. This handbook is written for “sustainable food systems innovators” by a group of innovators from Asia, Africa, the Americas and Europe who are leading initiatives to grow, share, sell and consume more sustainable foods in their local contexts. It includes experiences that are changing the organizational structures of local food systems to make them more sustainable. The handbook is organized as a “choose your own adventure” story where each reader – individually or in a facilitated group – can develop their own personalized learning and action journeys according to their priorities. The topics included in this handbook are arranged into four categories of innovations: engaging consumers, producing sustainably, getting products to market and getting organized.

Updates for many countries have made it possible to estimate hunger in the world with greater accuracy this year. In particular, newly accessible data enabled the revision of the entire series of undernourishment estimates for China back to 2000, resulting in a substantial downward shift of the series of the number of undernourished in the world. Nevertheless, the revision confirms the trend reported in past editions: the number of people affected by hunger globally has been slowly on the rise since 2014. The report also shows that the burden of malnutrition in all its forms continues to be a challenge. There has been some progress for child stunting, low birthweight and exclusive breastfeeding, but at a pace that is still too slow. Childhood overweight is not improving and adult obesity is on the rise in all regions. The report complements the usual assessment of food security and nutrition with projections of what the world may look like in 2030, if trends of the last decade continue. Projections show that the world is not on track to achieve Zero Hunger by 2030 and, despite some progress, most indicators are also not on track to meet global nutrition targets. The food security and nutritional status of the most vulnerable population groups is likely to deteriorate further due to the health and socio economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The report puts a spotlight on diet quality as a critical link between food security and nutrition. Meeting SDG 2 targets will only be possible if people have enough food to eat and if what they are eating is nutritious and affordable. The report also introduces new analysis of the cost and affordability of healthy diets around the world, by region and in different development contexts. It presents valuations of the health and climate-change costs associated with current food consumption patterns, as well as the potential cost savings if food consumption patterns were to shift towards healthy diets that include sustainability considerations. The report then concludes with a discussion of the policies and strategies to transform food systems to ensure affordable healthy diets, as part of the required efforts to end both hunger and all forms of malnutrition.

Available online: https://pub.norden.org/nord2020-048/ This cookbook of strategies for change is about the role that a strong public innovation system plays along the pathways towards sustainable food systems. We demonstrate this through a mission approach for deliberate food system transformation that can support people, planet and society. This strategy cookbook will provide the ingredients – templates for developing interventions, guides for how to get started and examples of cross-cutting projects – that you can use to create your own recipes for change. We offer a new, emergent way to work with complex and dynamic systems. The cookbook is intended primarily for national and regional innovation agencies, as the government has both a mandate and more authority than any other entity to lead the change needed to achieve sustainable food systems. However, because innovation ecosystems include a variety of different actors, this strategy cookbook also provides valuable insights into the roles that entrepreneurs and civil society and research organisations can play to cultivate change from the bottom-up.

"This book ... brings together high quality research, real world pragmatism and an understanding of the politics of Indian food systems."--Lawrence Haddad, Executive Director, GAIN and 2018 World Food Prize Laureate '[The authors] have done a masterful job of [demonstrating] paradoxes of India's rapid economic growth concurrently with ... persistent poverty, food insecurity and ... a triple burden of malnutrition.' - Uma Lele, President-Elect International Association of Agricultural Economics (IAAE) 'Using a broad food systems approach, this book presents [a] ... comprehensive analysis of the Indian food and agricultural system and its interaction with climate change, nutrition and health.' - Per Pinstrup-Andersen, Professor Emeritus, Cornell University and 2001 World Food Prize Laureate This open access book examines India's economic development, agricultural production, and nutrition through the lens of a "Food Systems Approach (FSA)." Despite economic progress, regional inequality, food insecurity and malnutrition persist. Simultaneously, recent trends in obesity and micro-nutrient deficiency indicate a future public health crisis. This book explores the challenges and opportunities to achieve a nutrition-secure future through diversified production systems, improved health and hygiene and greater individual capability to access a balanced diet. Within the context of developing countries, they highlight India's status as an outlier regarding high levels of stunting and global trends in obesity. This book discusses the policy and institutional interventions needed to promote a nutrition-sensitive food system and the multi-sectoral strategies needed to address malnutrition in India. Prabhu Pingali is Professor of Applied Economics and Founding Director of the Tata-Cornell Institute for Agriculture and Nutrition (TCI) at Cornell University. Climate change adaptation and mitigation in the agriculture sector will have to be pursued in the context of meeting projected global food production demands. Although there are practices that hold great potential for meeting both needs, there is no international agreement nor national policy framework within which to operate. Given this situation, early action holds great potential for countries to take positive action in the short run to unfold national and international policy, finance, and science inputs required. Potential conflicts with the international trading system can be addressed with the continued maturation of global climate policy.Information obtained from climate change studies can help us to predict which components are most likely to become more problematic in the future. Modeling can never be a perfect science, but unless we figure out a way to build planets identical to earth to perform experiments, the virtual planets they describe will remain the best available laboratories for studying future climate change. The present book written on Climate Resilient Agriculture for Ensuring Food Security provides some of the much-needed information collected from some of the world's leading climate scientists. The book comprehensively deals with important aspects of climate change such as causes of climate change; agriculture as a source of greenhouse gases; Impacts of climate change on agriculture; regional impacts; impact on crop protection (insect and mite pests, plant pathogens, nematodes, and weeds); adaptation; mitigation; and a road map ahead.
