The fifth Summer School organized by the European Associa tion of Experimental Social Psychology was held in Aix-en-Proven ce (France, from July 12 to 31, 1981. Previous schools had taken place in The Hague (The Nederlands) in 1966, Leuven (Belgium) in 1967, Konstanz (Germany) in 1972 and in Oxford (Great-Britain) in 1976. This is an important activity of the European Association and has always met with great success. This time, 130 applica tions were received while only 50 could be accepted, given the format adopted for the Summer School. They represented many different countries and institutions. To fully understand the aims of such a Summer School, es pecially of the present one, it is probably best to consider first its organization. Participants were graduates or young postdoctoral students in experimental social psychology. For three weeks they worked in five teams of ten participants each under the mentorship of a senior researcher. Each of five staff members had suggested a special topic of study in which they were interested, well be fore the start of the session. This enabled the teams to be de termined early enough for the participants to be able to prepare for the sessions. In Aix, in the magnificent surroundings of an old convent, afternoons (and often evenings as well) were spent discussing theoretical issues arising from the suggested topics and in planning research to test specific hypotheses.

Originally published in 1988, this book outlines a new evolutionary paradigm for understanding human society and mental structure, originating from the editor's work in primate ethology. It is supported and further elaborated by the contributors. Chance argues that two modes of social interaction, the agonic and hedonic, underlie social life and corresponding mentality. In the agonic mode we are concerned with self-security and our attention is much taken up with being accepted by a group. This mode is based on a recently discovered state of inhibited (braked) mental arousal. Social behaviour is either authoritarian or authority subservient, and has a tendency to control or be controlled. It curbs intelligence and restricts personality development. In the hedonic mode we are freer to form a network of personal relationships that are typically mutually supportive. The hedonic mode leads to the development of self-confidence and a relaxed empathic and collaborative personality with intelligence enhanced. The volume will still be of interest to all concerned with human affairs including those working in ethology, primatology, anthropology, social psychology, psychiatry and political sociology.

Originally published in 1957, this book presented an up-to-date account of psychological research into human social behaviour of the time. There are chapters on interaction between pairs of people, behaviour in small social groups, and human relations in industry. The author avoided the adoption of any particular theoretical position, and concentrated on the established empirical findings of the time. The results of several hundred investigations are summarised and compared, so that the principal generalisations which emerge can be seen. Stress is placed on rigorous methods of research, and a critical account is given of current techniques of social research, showing the importance of experimental and statistical methods. Careful consideration is given to the danger of the investigator disturbing what is being investigated. Use is made of recent ideas about theory and explanation, and the different kinds of theory used in experimental psychology were considered for the first time as possible ways of accounting for group behaviour. This book was intended not only for students of psychology and of the other social sciences, but also for industrialists, administrators and indeed all who were interested in the laws underlying social behaviour. Today it can be read and enjoyed in its historical context.
