Inhaltsangabe:Einleitung: Lettland Riga? Ach so Russland! Ah ja - Baltikum - das Land in der Mitte? Der erste Kontakt mit Lettland läuft immer wieder in dieser oder einer ähnlichen Form ab. Das Interesse am Baltikum kann in der westlichen Öffentlichkeit und auch in der Wirtschaft als sehr gering bezeichnet werden. Die direkten Nachbarstaaten der Europäischen Union wie Polen, Tschechien und Ungarn genießen bei Meinungsbildern einen höheren Stellenwert. Ist dieses Desinteresse am Baltikum und somit auch an Lettland gerechtfertigt? Mit einer Einwohnerzahl von ca. 2,4 Millionen und etwa der Größe Bayerns, erscheint das Land im europäischen Vergleich eher unbedeutend. Die Größe ist in diesem Fall jedoch kein Argument. Als Teil der zerfallenden Sowjetunion hatte das Land die Funktion eines Bindegliedes zwischen zwei Wirtschaftssystemen. Auf der einen Seite die wirtschaftliche Einbindung in die sowjetische Planwirtschaft und auf der anderen eine historische und kulturelle Verbundenheit zu den westeuropäischen Ländern, insbesondere Deutschland. Viele deutsche und andere westliche Unternehmen bringen immer wieder ein Interesse am wiedererstandenen Standort Lettland zum Ausdruck, schrecken jedoch vor dem Unbekannten mit all den möglichen Folgen zurück. Sind diese Zweifel aufgrund einer 50-jährigen russischen Besetzung berechtigt? Die folgende Arbeit entstand während eines 8-monatigen Aufenthaltes in Riga und somit unter Bedingungen, wie sie auch ein potentieller Investor vorfinden würde. Das Ziel besteht vor allem darin, die Risiken und Unwägbarkeiten aber auch die Möglichkeiten, die der Standort Lettland bietet, zu analysieren und zu dokumentieren. Da eine Direktinvestition im Ausland auch Auswirkungen auf das Unternehmen im Inland hat, soll mit diesen Faktoren begonnen werden. Sollte es sich für ein Unternehmen als positiv herausstellen zu expandieren, so sollen im weiteren die dafür möglichen Formen beschrieben werden. Die spezifischen Bedingungen die Unternehmen dazu bewegen könnten, sich für Lettland als Investitionsstandort zu entscheiden, sowie die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung sollen einen Schwerpunkt der Arbeit darstellen. Für die ersten Schritte in Lettland sollen die gegebenen Möglichkeiten und Probleme bei der Gründung eines Unternehmens sowie der verschiedenen Gesellschaftsformen untersucht und die einzelnen Schritte dargestellt werden.
