Excerpt from Discussions on Philosophical Questions As to the Discussions themselves, their main purpose is to advance the Scottish school of philosophy. They are not intended to be a system in themselves. This book is really a supplement to Hamilton's Metaphysics, in connection with which it ought to be studied. It seeks to correct what is considered incorrect in Hamil ton; to develop more fully his system; and to bring it down to the present time - answering the obj eetions and refuting the errors of opposing systems in their latest expressions. These discussions were prepared by the author in his mature years, some of them having been written, and all of them having been revised by him since 1890. They fairly represent, therefore, his ability, his scholarship, and the final conclusions of his life of study. Excerpt from Questions of the Day in Philosophy and Psychology Some Recent Philosophical Movements. In the case of Nos. V. And IX. I have availed myself freely of material which I had already published in another form in the Hlbbert Journal and the International Journal of Ethics: for permission to do so I am indebted to the courtesy of the Editors of these magazines. A considerable proportion of the audience to which the lectures were addressed consisted of persons pos sessing little previous knowledge of the subject, and the essays as now published are intended to be intelli gible to the general educated reader. To those versed 'in the technicalities of philosophical discussion this must be my apology for the popular style in which these papers are written. Excerpt from The Problems of Philosophy I have derived valuable assistance from unpublished writings of Mr. G. E. Moore and Mr. J. M. Keynes: from the former, as te gards the relations of sense-data to physical objects, and from the latter as regards prob ability and induction. I have also profited greatly by the criticisms and suggestions of Professor Gilbert Murray. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Problems Of Philosophy written by John Grier Hibben and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-12-24 with Philosophy categories.

This philosophy book is a perfect introduction for anyone interested in the subject. The central theme of the book is discussion of the big questions (the "Problems" of the title) which philosophy strives to answer. There are other philosophy books with similar titles, including an identically titled book by the famous philosopher Bertrand Russell (also available from Forgotten Books and well worth a look), but this one contains arguably the best introduction to the broadest range of philosophical thought. John Grier Hibben, was broadly educated and seemed to excel at anything he turned his hand to. He graduated as a mathematician, earned a living teaching French and German and was for many years a widely respected preacher. After gaining a PhD he taught philosophy at Princeton and later became its president. The first two chapters of this book discuss the nature and value of philosophy. In the words of Hibben, "Philosophy is concerned with what is, in contrast with that which seems to be." The grand Problem then is to "discover the nature of reality." The other chapters cover discussions of existence, origins, the soul (whether as in the religious meaning or the sum of a consciousness), knowledge, logic, ethics (and it's sub-Problem, politics, or human relations) and finally of art and aesthetics. These are all covered in detail and with a great explanation, comparison and discussion of the different schools of thought, which is what makes this book so fascinating as an introduction to philosophy. If this book has a flaw it is that the different forms of religious thought are given too much attention in comparison to other philosophies, which may not be so interesting for the less religious times in which we now live. There is still plenty here for even the most ardent atheist however. The beauty of the writing is that even though the author is obviously deeply intelligent and knowledgeable about his topic the text remains accessible and the explanations clear and jargon-free. Excerpt from Medieval Philosophy But medieval philosophy deserves attention and study not only for historical reasons, because it forms an integral part of the history of European philosophy, but also for its own sake. Although the approach and the setting may be different in different periods, the same, or at least similar, philosophical problems inevitably tend to recur. And even though philosophy is not equivalent to the accumulation of particular facts or items of knowledge which increase in number as the years go on, one is not entitled to assume in advance that the medieval discussions of philosophical problems are worthless, simply be cause they took place so many centuries ago. Some philosophers would, indeed, say that the methods and aims of the thirteenth-century metaphysicians were mistaken. But that, whether true or false, is a philosophic assertion which is itself Open to question. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Problems in Philosophy This volume may seem to be constructed on the idea of gathering up the fragments that nothing may be lost. This precept, however, wise as it often is, does not express the law of production in the present case. A few points in philosophy invited more clear or more thorough state ment. This labor I chose to undertake directly and briefly, rather than to attempt it as a part of a more ex tended and systematic work. One evil in philosophy is the accumulation of fruitless discussions. A few positions fortunately taken may be easily lost in their practical value by the extended treatises which accompany them, traversing old ground with no sufl'icient reward. Philoso phy, above most topics, calls for an explicit statement of a few fundamental principles, and a pushing of inquiry in reference to them, till some satisfactory conclusion is reached. The present volume aims to make, in the most direct way, a contribution on the more obscure topics of philosophy. What it has to say is not, taken collectively, extended, and may be still farther reduced by the reader by confining his attention to the one or more subjects which may appeal directly to him. Only one of these discussions - that on liberty - has appeared elsewhere, and that essay has been somewhat modified. Excerpt from The Spectrum of Truth The following pages have no pretension to be a history of philosophy, or to discuss or appraise the merits of different theories. All that is aimed at is to provide a conspectus within the smallest possible compass, of the characteristic attitude of the chief philosophical systems towards the great speculative questions with which philosophy is directly concerned. Recent, and regrettable theological controversies have turned mainly upon certain great questions that fall strictly within the province of philosophy, and some simple apparatus such as is here provided is a necessary equipment for those who have made no special study of the subjects, but desire to form an Opinion of the merits of the questions at issue. And it is hoped that the condensed form of this slight sketch may be of use even to students of philosophy by bringing into prominence certain points of agreement and harmony which are for the most part overlaid and obscured by lengthy disquisitions, but which show clearly in a mere map of the country.
